The Risk Engineering Platform team at Coinbase is vital in protecting our platform and millions of users from fraud and financial risks. We engineer adaptable, scalable, and customizable systems that detect and thwart fraud in real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled workflows. The Role As a Lead Frontend Software Engineer on the Risk Engineering team, you will assume a technical leadership position for diverse projects, guiding architectural decisions that shape our risk detection and mitigation systems. You will oversee intricate projects from inception to delivery, mentor junior engineers, and set technical standards that enhance our team's capabilities. Your contributions will significantly impact millions of users and substantial transaction volumes. What You'll Be Doing Technical Leadership & Delivery Draft, review, and approve technical design documents for complex features and systems. Lead the execution of end-to-end projects, encompassing implementation, deployment, and monitoring. Design, define, and significantly contribute to the development of new systems and major features, leveraging your experienced judgment. Oversee multiple projects from start to finish, irrespective of complexity. Facilitate team rituals such as code reviews, on-call rotations, and incident responses. Translate high-level concepts and ambiguous business requirements into effective architectures. System Architecture & Quality Consistently improve code quality and address technical debt across the team's codebases. Identify, propose, and implement scalable solutions applicable across the team. Develop systems or features that bolster the team's ability to deliver exceptional work. Address significant debt and quality challenges while maintaining existing systems. Lead troubleshooting, bug resolution, and enhancements in performance and scalability. Ensure solutions are pragmatic for teams both within and beyond your immediate function. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing Guide, mentor, and develop junior engineers on your team. Share your expertise to amplify your impact and enhance team capabilities. Improve fellow engineers' efficiency through guidance and best practices. Proactively tackle unowned or less appealing tasks to accelerate team progress. Collaborate with Engineering Managers and Product Managers to advocate for project prioritization. What We Look For In You Required Qualifications 5+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of delivering complex systems. Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and mentor peers. Deep expertise in at least one modern frontend framework, preferably React and TypeScript. Experience in building and scaling distributed systems in production environments. Strong understanding of system design, architectural patterns, and trade-offs. Proficiency in navigating ambiguous requirements and providing clarity for technical challenges. Experience leading incident responses and conducting post-mortems. Preferred Qualifications Background in risk management, fraud detection, or financial systems at scale. Familiarity with machine learning models in production settings. Experience with real-time event processing and streaming architectures (e.g., Kafka, Flink). Understanding of payment systems (ACH, cards, crypto) and their associated fraud patterns. Knowledge of regulatory compliance and security measures. A record of enhancing team productivity through tools and process improvements. Technical Skills Successful Frontend Engineers Should Have: Expert-level proficiency in React and TypeScript/JavaScript. A deep understanding of modern frontend architectures and methods for performance optimization. Experience with state management solutions and design systems for components. Strong knowledge of web security best practices and accessibility standards. Experience in creating complex, data-rich user interfaces. A history of advancing the frontend developer experience and tooling. Pay Transparency Notice:
Compensation for this position ranges from $186,065 to $218,900 USD, depending on your location. Full-time offers include bonus eligibility, equity, and comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
