COWI is seeking a Heavy Civil/Structural Designer (Bridge, Tunnel, Marine) to join our dynamic team in Halifax, NS. In this role, you will collaborate closely with experts on some of North America's most impactful projects, primarily focusing on exciting bridge, tunnel, and marine work. We believe in developing versatile engineers who can apply their skills across various disciplines, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. We are thrilled to have hands-on exposure and active projects on bridges (MacKay Bridge, Macdonald Bridge, Seal Island Bridge, Pierre-Laporte Bridge), tunnels (New Fraser River Tunnel, Ontario Line South, 2nd Avenue Subway), marine projects, and many others around the globe all from our office in Atlantic Canada.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Assist in preparing design calculations, drawings, and cost estimates to support structural analysis, steel and concrete design, and evaluations including the development of work plans, schedules, and budgets focused on heavy civil (structural) projects, including bridges.
- Produce standard documents such as technical and construction specifications under applicable design codes, including engineering reports, and other technical documentation.
- Apply design code clauses (e.g. CSA-S6-25, AASHTO, etc.) to engineering tasks assigned under supervision.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with team members.
- Attend project meetings and provide an update on assigned tasks and assist in preparing engineering reports and other technical documents along with being able to perform other responsibilities as required.
- Conduct inspections and site visits as necessary, enhancing your hands-on experience in diverse environments.
- Review and analyse Requests for Information, Field Change Requests and other site Technical Queries.
- Plan, evaluate, and adapt work using independent judgment and innovative problem-solving approaches, seeking technical guidance and supervisory approval for complex or unusual problems and project plans.

On top of that, you will:
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering (or higher designation), with 0-3 years of related experience in heavy civil structural design (bridge, tunnel, marine structures), or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Be a registered Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in home province or territory, or ability to obtain registrations within 12 months of employment
- Have exposure and some experience in the use of structural design codes such as CSA:S6, and/or AASHTO.
- Familiarity with structural analysis software programs (ex: CSiBridge, MIDAS, SOFiSTiK) – experience in coding (e.g. python) is considered an asset
- Be conversant in the use of engineering and drafting software such as Excel, MathCAD, AutoCAD and Bluebeam Revu to efficiently produce engineering calculations and supporting documentation.
