Hiring Unit: Department of Biology (Professor Andrew Gonzalez)
Position Summary:

  • Collaborates with scientists and stakeholders to develop and document workflows for calculating Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and indicators.
  • Tests pipelines to determine whether analytical results conform to the expected result of the indicator.
  • Creates proof of concept scientific workflows and documentation examples.
  • Provides expertise in R and python coding to facilitate data analysis and workflow development.
  • Coordinates the workflow peer-review process to ensure the code/models are reliable and generalizable and the documentation is up to standards.
  • Engages (and consults) with partners and contributors to understand their needs.
  • Communicates complex data science and modelling concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Presents the BON in a Box project to various online and in-person events.

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with scientists and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Adaptability and a quick learning ability to navigate different realms of biology.
  • Maturity, professionalism, and a commitment to advancing biodiversity conservation efforts.

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in biology or equivalent.
  • Three years' experience in R coding, Julia and Python an asset.
  • Proficiency in R and python coding and experience with biodiversity data analysis, Julia an asset.
  • Fluent in English (reading and writing), French an asset.

Location:   This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and the work for this position is expected to be performed in Quebec.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.  The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # (4) qualifier on a scale of 0-4.
