About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Hydraulic Turbine-Generator Mechanical Engineer to support major hydroelectric capital projects for one of our clients in St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador.

This role is a technical engineering position focused on the design review, procurement support, installation, and commissioning of large hydraulic turbine-generator systems. The successful candidate will work as part of an owner-side engineering team and report to a Lead Engineer on assigned projects.

This is a contract position with an anticipated start date in February 2026, for an initial term of one (1) year, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and performance. The estimated effort for this role is 37.5 hours per week, based on standard business hours.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support major new-build and refurbishment projects through feasibility, front-end, and detailed engineering phases

  • Review engineering work prepared by consultants and manufacturers

  • Prepare and review technical specifications, engineering reports, and procurement documentation

  • Conduct technical evaluations of bids and provide recommendations

  • Participate in design reviews, constructability workshops, safety-by-design sessions, risk reviews, and project meetings

  • Review consultant and manufacturer calculations, drawings, assumptions, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable standards and best practices

  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and products

  • Consult with operations and other stakeholders to ensure alignment with operational requirements

  • Research and analyze historical documentation and operating data to inform engineering decisions

  • Respond to technical and site-based queries, including troubleshooting and investigations

  • Provide technical input into project estimates and schedules

  • Provide on-site technical and construction support to internal teams and contractors as required

  • Support quality assurance and quality control activities through design, manufacturing, construction, testing, and commissioning phases

  • Ensure quality and completeness of as-built documentation, operating manuals, and turnover packages

  • Actively support and promote a strong safety culture

Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university

  • Eligible for registration with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience, including several years supporting project execution

  • Experience with the design, manufacture, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of large rotating power-generation equipment

  • Experience with a turbine-generator OEM and/or electric utility is considered an asset

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams

Additional Details
  • A valid Canadian drivers license is required

  • Some travel to project sites may be required

  • Candidates must be fit-for-work and meet client-specific site requirements
