ABOUT THE ROLE

Under general supervision, the Cook performs a variety of food preparation duties in an efficient, sanitary, and consistent manner. This includes but is not limited to cleaning surfaces, equipment, dishes and utensils; prepping and assembling food and beverages; assembling and dissembling food trays; as well as delivering and picking up food, as required. The incumbent must be prepared to work early and late hours in a high-pressure work environment, being efficient and knowledgeable about food preparation needs, and following all safety and food handling procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Remain flexible and perform any combination of the below duties to maintain kitchen work areas.
  • Scrape food from dirty dishes, wash them by hand and then place in racks to be cleaned by dishwashing machine.
  • Once dishwasher cycle has been completed, dry and stack clean dishes.
  • Ensure equipment, utensils, and surfaces are kept in clean orderly condition.
  • Wash all surfaces including worktables, walls, refrigerators, countertops and shelves.
  • Remove trash and bring it to industrial bins.
  • Sweep and wash floors daily.
  • Handwash pots, pans, and trays.
  • Load or unload trucks with food supplies.
  • Transfer supplies and equipment between storage work areas as required.
  • Assist with food preparation, portioning, packaging, and serving, as required.
  • Wash and peel vegetables, using a knife or peeling machine.
  • Chop ingredients, separate portions, weigh cuts, prepare cold foods and shellfish, slice meat, prepare prebaked goods and make salads.
  • Assemble and dissemble food trays, as required.
  • Deliver and pick up food and food trays, required.
  • Support Meals on Wheels operations, if applicable.
  • Ensure proper covering and storage of food items according to standards and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy appearance.
  • Adhere to all safety, sanitation and food preparation standards. 
  • Perform customer service duties as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of one (1) year of cooking experience required.
  • High School Diploma or Grade 12 GED equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Food Handling Course.
  • Valid class 5 Driver's License & Clean Driver's Abstract is required
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required
  • Working experience in the healthcare, childcare, or school industry is preferred.
  • Experience in First Nations community is a definite asset
