DentalScan is the medical AI division of ReplyQuick, one of the fastest-growing and most tractioned startups in the United States.

We build advanced backend systems that power supervised machine learning for intra-oral image analysis using smartphone-captured dental photos. Our mission is to support families in need, children in need, underserved communities, and individuals without access to immediate dental care.

Our platform supports a rapidly expanding dataset of 50,000+ labeled intra-oral images, moving toward 100,000+ as part of our continuous retraining and clinical improvement pipeline.

The backend engineering team builds the infrastructure that makes all of this possible, from ML endpoints to real-time reporting systems.

Core clinical categories supported by our system include:

• Gum inflammation and gingivitis staging

• Plaque and calculus detection

• Recession classification

• Orthodontic tooth movement tracking

• Implant and crown monitoring

• General intra-oral diagnostic classifications

This internship is reserved for highly talented backend engineers who are passionate about scalable systems, distributed architecture, and building technology with real-world clinical and social impact.

Role Overview

As a Backend Software Engineer at DentalScan, you will work directly on the backend systems that support our ML models, dentist dashboards, image ingestion workflows, vertical-specific reporting logic, product APIs, and compliance infrastructure.

You must bring prior experience in backend development, strong problem-solving ability, and a genuine passion for building meaningful medical technology.

This is a 12-week unpaid internship with the potential to transition into a paid full-time backend engineering role upon successful performance.

You must attend two daily meetings (10:30 AM PST and 2:30 PM PST) and commit 25–30 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend APIs for ML inference, scan uploads, and reporting

• Build and optimize image ingestion and preprocessing endpoints

• Integrate ML output into vertical-specific flows (gyms, schools, charities, etc.)

• Build secure dentist-facing endpoints for clinical findings

• Work with AWS (S3, Lambda, EC2, API Gateway, or similar)

• Implement database schemas and optimize performance (PostgreSQL / Supabase)

• Establish secure, compliant data-handling workflows aligned with HIPAA principles

• Develop internal services for dataset labeling, dentist corrections, and feedback loops

• Collaborate with ML engineers to deploy and maintain ML endpoints

• Improve reliability, uptime, and monitoring for backend services

• Maintain documentation, API references, and backend architecture diagrams

• Participate in daily syncs and align with engineering milestones

Required Qualifications

Only highly qualified and passionate applicants will be considered.

• Strong knowledge of backend development using , Python, or Go

• Experience with REST APIs and backend architectural patterns

• Familiarity with AWS services (S3, EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, or similar)

• Experience working with relational databases (PostgreSQL or Supabase preferred)

• Ability to design secure and efficient data-processing pipelines

• Understanding of authentication, authorization, and session management

• Exposure to integrating or consuming machine learning APIs

• Strong debugging, problem-solving, and analytical ability

• Clear communication and disciplined, reliable execution

• Passion for medical AI and meaningful impact-driven technology

• Commitment to attending required meetings and working 25–30 hours per week
