Sterile Processing Technician (Part-Time – Day Shift)

Location: Baystate Wing Hospital – Palmer, MA

Schedule: Part-time, 24 hours per week
Shift: Day shift with variable morning start times

Experience, certification, and endoscope processing experience preferred

Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician performs a wide range of duties related to the decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions, hospital policies, and regulatory standards. This role requires strong knowledge of infection control practices, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform decontamination of biohazardous materials using automated processors and manual methods while adhering to infection control and safety standards

  • Inspect instruments and equipment for cleanliness, function, and integrity prior to assembly

  • Assemble instrument trays and specialty sets accurately using reference materials and surgical instrumentation knowledge

  • Operate steam, ethylene oxide (EO), and low-temperature gas plasma sterilizers according to manufacturer instructions and departmental policies

  • Monitor and document all sterilization parameters, including biological and chemical indicators

  • Conduct quality checks to ensure sterile goods meet package integrity and expiration requirements

  • Maintain accurate documentation and perform clerical duties related to sterile processing workflows

  • Maintain a clean, organized work environment to support efficiency and safety

  • Prioritize work assignments to meet the needs of surgical and clinical customers

  • Collaborate effectively with peers, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals

  • Inspect sterile goods for package integrity and expiration dates

Job Responsibilities

Demonstrates proficient knowledge and application of sterilization standards and practices

Proficient in assembly of specialty trays utilizing reference materials

Establishes work priorities to meet customer and departmental needs

Utilizes critical thinking skills to address equipment malfunctions and escalates issues appropriately

Demonstrates commitment to organizational service standards and operating principles: Trust, Respect, Integrity, Communication, and Collaboration

Participates in quality improvement activities, audits, and compliance reviews

Communicates operational or procedural changes through shift reports or department communication tools

Required Work Experience
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a Sterile Processing Department or as an entry-level Surgical Technician

Preferred Qualifications
  • Sterile Processing certification

  • Endoscope processing experience

Skills & Competencies
  • Proficiency in computer applications and medical terminology

  • Ability to complete required orientation (8–12 weeks), web-based training, and hand hygiene education

  • Ability to perform essential functions in:

    • Decontamination

    • Prep and packaging

    • Sterilization

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

Education:

GED or HiSET (Required)

Certifications:
