JOB OVERVIEW:
The Forestry technician is responsible for providing support to the forester by performing field duties like tree measurement, and pest/disease monitoring, while also helping with data collection, enforcing regulations, and working outdoors to manage forest health, resources, and sustainable practices under supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate degree in forestry or equivalent experience
- Minimum 0-2 years' experience in the description of work
- Knowledge of biology, ecology, and conservation principles
- Ability to productively work independently
- Must be reliable, honest, and have a strong work ethic
- Proficient with software programs including but not limited to MS Office, mapping/GPS software, etc.
- Must be a US citizen
- Valid driver's license
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Determining and implementing harvest prescriptions
- Measuring trees
- Boundary identification
- Marking residual trees
- Conducting surveys on soil, wildlife, and inventory
- Identifying insects and tree diseases
- Mapping areas with GPS software and providing job layout
- Assisting with timber sales as required
- Assist with enforcing regulations (permits, fire safety)
- Maintain tools and equipment
- Possible minor equipment operation when required (UTV, Skidder, chainsaw, etc.)
- Assist with implementing forest management plan when required
- Assist with implementing erosion and sediment plans when required
- Monitor harvest activity to ensure work quality as required
- Utilize forestry and mapping software or programs in conjunction with production teams and management.
- Operation of 4-wheel drive pickup truck and UTV in offroad settings
- Maintain tools and equipment
- Perform site visits during production and/or excavation operations as required
- Communicate project status and/or changes to management as required
- Report job site safety issues or concerns to EHS and General manager(s) prior to start of production if necessary
- Overnight travel as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read and write the English language as well as understand and follow oral instructions; communicate with supervisors, co-workers and the public effectively
- Ability to arrive at work on time and predictably
- Able to comply with all company policies and procedures
- Ability to travel and work overtime when required
- Must have strong work ethic
- Able to push and pull with hands, arms, and feet repetitively
- Must have good visual and auditory physical capabilities to manage sights and sounds in a hazardous work environment
- Able to be alert and cognitive of multiple concurrent activities of the job site, including awareness of other employees, subcontractors, machinery, equipment, and moving traffic when applicable
- Ability to work around loud noises
- Coordination between hand, eyes, feet to guide equipment and objects
- Must be able to mount and dismount safely off vehicles and equipment
- Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment
- Must be able to walk on uneven terrain
- Able to repetitively lift 50 pounds
- Ability to safely perform work outside in all types of various weather (i.e. heat, cold, wind, sun and inclement weather, etc.) on a regular basis
