About
The Academic Advisor will work as part of a team to provide academic advising (both virtually and in person) to current and future communication (COMM) majors. The advisor is an important part of building community and belonging within the Department. Tasks can include, but are not limited to: advising current and prospective students on major requirements and specialization selection, degree clearances, prerequisite checks, course permissions, managing social media for the undergraduate program, maintaining the undergraduate advising ELMS page, assisting with student group events and planning, presenting workshops, coordinating or attending events, and orientation advising. Other duties that relate to the undergraduate program in communication may be required.
Physical Demands:
Mostly sedentary work performed in an office environment requiring the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards for extended periods of time. Ability to review, prepare, and analyze data and figures, transcribe, and engage in extensive reading of materials and computer screens. Ability to traverse short/long distances to attend meetings and events. May occasionally need to be able to carry up to 20 lbs.
Preferences:
Preferred Education:
Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or related field preferred.
Preferred Experience:
Experience in academic advising and working with diverse populations is highly desirable.
Experience with advising technology preferred.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of campus degree requirements, especially those related to computer science Knowledge of software tools such as TerpEnage (Salesforce), uAchieve, SIS, Advise on the Web (AoW), Workday. Knowledge and experience in the field of communication is highly desirable.
Detail oriented with excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and oral and written presentation skills. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
Minimum QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Two (2) years of experience providing counseling or advising services. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of best practices in organization and administration. Knowledge of public relations and marketing techniques. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
