About

Overview
Select how often (in days) to receive an alert: At Severn Trent, our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials—and we’re passionate about making a difference. Not just because we should, but because we care. As we enter AMP8, our most ambitious five-year investment programme yet—nearly £13bn, with £6bn dedicated to capital projects—we’re embracing innovation like never before. Our new Plug and Play approach is transforming how we deliver infrastructure: modular, scalable, and smart. Our new Plug and Play approach will be a collection of common parts that can be connected in different ways and work together (like mechanical skids, modular frames, and packaged treatment units). They can be mixed and matched to create a whole range of different products. We’re looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Plug and Play team and help shape the future of water and wastewater infrastructure. What you’ll do
Lead the development of innovative mechanical systems and modular solutions from concept through to detailed design. Work across multidisciplinary teams to create standardised, repeatable, and efficient mechanical designs that are safe, reliable, and future-ready. Lead the mechanical design process, including specifications, optioneering, and detailed design. Collaborate with stakeholders to understand project requirements and translate them into robust mechanical solutions. Support early-stage commissioning planning and ensure designs meet regulatory, safety, and operational standards. Continuously improve standard designs based on feedback, risk assessments, and performance data. Ensure seamless integration between product design and site implementation teams. What you’ll bring to the role
We value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight; we want people who show up and roll their sleeves up. A design-focused mechanical engineer with a passion for infrastructure, modular engineering, and innovation. A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and/or a minimum of 5 years’ proven experience in mechanical design. Familiarity with CAD and digital mechanical design tools (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks, AutoCAD Mechanical). Experience managing product life cycles and working with supply chains. Strong understanding of H&S, mechanical safety, and risk management in engineering design. An innovative and collaborative mindset with the ability to influence stakeholders to drive practical, effective solutions. Flexibility to travel between sites throughout the UK on an ad hoc basis as projects demand. What’s in it for you
