Reports To: Spark Arts Manager – The Firehouse Community Arts Center

Location: The Firehouse Community Arts Center, 2111 S. Hamlin Ave., Chicago, IL

Compensation: $35/hour – Part-Time (Approximately 12 hours per week)

Program: After School Matters – Firehouse Step Team

Position Overview

The Firehouse Community Arts Center is seeking an energetic and passionate Step Team Instructor to lead youth ages 11–18 in the fundamentals of stepping. The instructor will facilitate the After School Matters Step Team program at The Firehouse, guiding participants through creative expression, teamwork, and discipline while preparing them for live recitals and community showcases.

This role emphasizes not only performance but also youth development—encouraging academic excellence, leadership, and college readiness through the art of step.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging, structured step classes 3–4 days per week (approximately 12 hours total).
  • Teach students the fundamentals of stepping, rhythm, coordination, and choreography.
  • Prepare youth for performances, recitals, and special showcases.
  • Foster an environment of teamwork, discipline, and creativity.
  • Incorporate lessons that connect stepping with cultural history, leadership, and higher education pathways.
  • Maintain attendance and participation records in accordance with After School Matters guidelines.
  • Communicate regularly with Firehouse staff, parents, and After School Matters representatives.
  • Serve as a positive role model, promoting respect, consistency, and academic accountability.

Qualifications

  • Experience in step, dance, or performance arts instruction (minimum 2 years preferred).
  • Proven ability to engage and mentor youth ages 11–18.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to positive youth development and educational success.
  • Reliable and punctual with strong classroom management abilities.

  • Must complete all After School Matters onboarding requirements (background check, training, etc.).

Schedule

  • Approximately 12 hours per week, Monday–Thursday, after school hours.

Additional time may be required for recitals or community performances.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract

Pay: $ $35.00 per hour
