Job Title: Senior Engineer – Electrical Engineering (C & I)
Location: Barrow-in-Furness – Hybrid (2 days onsite per fortnight depending on business needs)
Salary: Competitive (Commensurate with skills and experience)
What You’ll Be Doing:Join us in a pivotal role where your expertise will shine! As a Senior Engineer, you will:
- Develop functional designs for Control & Instrumentation (C&I) solutions in electrical systems, deriving designs from Piping & Instrumentation diagrams.
- Create Bills of Materials for C&I equipment.
- Specify instrumentation for measuring pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analysis tailored to specific process conditions.
- Produce C&I designs that meet a variety of standards, including functional, safety, defence, British, naval, and nuclear standards.
- Assess compliance against non-functional stakeholders (EMC, Shock, Metallics, etc.).
- Generate verification evidence to demonstrate design compliance.
- Draft various design documents such as I/O schedules, instrument schedules, and functional design specifications.
- Implement physical system-to-system interface designs.
- Lead technical design reviews for C&I.
- Present technical arguments clearly and logically.
- Conduct peer reviews.
- Manage system design maturity to meet program demands.
- Collaborate with internal and external customers as part of a dynamic technical team.
We’re looking for someone with a strong foundation and a passion for engineering. You should have:
- BEng (Hons) / MEng or equivalent.
- Progress towards professional registration.
- Strong technical report writing skills.
- Demonstrable experience in the engineering lifecycle.
- Knowledge of defence standards is a plus.
- Experience in system calculations, modelling, and analysis .
- Understanding of at least one of the following areas:
- Legacy submarine design programs, including:
- Experience with high, medium, and low voltage systems.
- Knowledge of control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
- Experience with IEC 61508 – Functional Safety (or similar) and producing supporting evidence for safety claims.
- A multi-disciplinary understanding of engineering, including Mechanical, Process, Instrument, Electrical, Control, and Safety.
- Experience specifying equipment for Hazardous Areas and producing verification evidence like Hazardous Area Schedules and Intrinsically Safe Loop Calculations.
- Input to the production and improvement of process instructions.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on the SSNA program and the next generation of submarine design. As a Senior Engineer, you will support Principal Engineers and external specialists in the development, analysis, integration, and verification of platform control and instrumentation systems. You’ll lead analysis efforts and produce technical reports, ensuring that operator control console designs meet defined criteria and program demands.
