This position is part of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), Department of the Interior (DOI). As a Security Guard you will be responsible for providing protective security services guarding the campus of SIPI, including personnel, students, equipment, property and materials.

DutiesAs a Security Guard, GS-0085-5, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
- Perform typical daily duties and responsibilities of the security guard, including foot and vehicle patrol, inspections, monitoring security of an area, entrance, or building.
- Coordinate information and responses to ensure consistency and conformance with program policies.
- Explain or provides guidance on laws, regulations, policies, standards, or procedures to management, personnel, or clients.
- Respond to emergencies and provides first aid if necessary.
- Complete forms, documents, or routine reports.

- A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.
- As a condition of employment, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial or 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
- If you are a male applicant born after 12/31/1959, you are required to register under the Military Selective Service Act and the Defense Authorization Act of 1986, in order to be eligible for appointment to this agency.
- Driving Requirement (Required only at time of appointment): Incumbent may be required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
- Required to obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain First Aid certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
- This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) that requires pre-employment drug testing and is subject to random testing thereafter.

Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.

In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirements you must also meet the following Minimum Qualifications requirements below.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
GS-05 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level that includes: Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.

Additional informationInitial appointments to the competitive or excepted service: The probationary or trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
