Utility Worker II positions lead and participate in the work of a crew to perform semi-skilled construction and maintenance work; assist skilled trades workers and repair technicians in the replacement, installation, maintenance, and repair of various airports, sewer, street, public works facilities, and parks by performing the less skilled tasks in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting, welding, plastering, cement finishing, and masonry; drive trucks, forklifts and other maintenance vehicles; and perform other duties as assigned.

Notes:

  • The following special salary wage increase is scheduled to take effect Utility Worker II: 5% effective 1/1/26
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Utility Worker II employees may be required to work under one or more of the following conditions: Heights up to 20 feet; depths (subterranean) to 60 feet; confined spaces inches); exposure to paint, oil, and sewer fumes; outdoor exposure to the elements and inclement weather; and lift and carry items weighing up to 90 pounds.
  • Utility Worker II employees may be required to work nights, stand-by, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Utility Worker II employees may be required to drive vehicles equipped to tow light duty trailers.
  • Utility Worker II employees may be required to drive vehicles equipped with standard 4-speed transmissions.
  • Utility Worker II employees may be required to operate a radio or other communication devices depending on their job location.
  • Utility Worker II employees may be required to enter and record work activities via a computer tablet.
  • Some Utility Worker II positions may require certification in asbestos containment, abatement, and sampling, meeting all the criteria in Section 5208 of Title 8 of the California Administration Code, at the time of hire.
  • Some Utility Worker II employees are required to pass a medical physical, respiratory fit test, and obtain Confined Space Certification within six months from date of hire. Employees will be required to obtain and maintain Confined Space Certification to retain employment.
  • Utility Worker II employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results.

*MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS *
You must meet the following requirements on the date that you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  • One year of full-time experience as a Utility Worker I or Laborer with the City of San Diego.
  • One year of full-time PAID experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of facilities such as walkways or roadways, wood or concrete structures, or sewer and/or water systems.

Notes:

  • Manual labor experience only, such as maintaining grounds, cleaning buildings, or motive servicing cars, trucks, or heavy equipment is NOT qualifying.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

Note:

  • Some positions may require a valid California Class B Driver License AND a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two years at the time of hire.
