About
Location: Remote (UK / Europe) with occasional global travel
Daily Rate: Competitive + benefits (DOE)
Type: Contract
Mploy Group is partnering with a leading organisation operating at the forefront of hyperscale and mission‑critical data centre delivery, seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support global programmes.
This is a remote‑based role, offering the opportunity to work on large‑scale international data centre projects, with occasional global travel for key design reviews, site engagement, and commissioning support.
The Role You will act as a senior mechanical design specialist within a globally distributed delivery model, providing technical leadership and assurance across data centre projects from early concept through to commissioning.
The role suits engineers who have worked in, or closely alongside, large global operators (hyperscalers, major consultancies, or tier‑one EPCs) and are comfortable operating as a design authority while collaborating remotely with multi‑disciplinary teams worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and contribute to the mechanical design of data centre facilities, with a strong focus on cooling and heat rejection systems
Provide technical guidance and support to AEs, consultants, and contractors from concept design through detailed design, construction support, and commissioning
Review and challenge mechanical designs, calculations, and technical submissions to ensure alignment with performance, reliability, and resilience requirements
Support development and maintenance of basis of design (BoD) documents, reference designs, and mechanical standards
Act as a subject matter expert for data centre mechanical architecture, resilience strategies, and failure‑mode mitigation
Technical Focus Areas
Hydraulic system design and analysis, including pump selection, pressure drop, redundancy, and fault tolerance
Stress modelling and mechanical analysis of pipework and systems (thermal expansion, supports, vibration, constructability)
Process cooling systems, including:
Evaporative heat rejection (cooling towers, adiabatic systems)
Non‑evaporative heat rejection (dry coolers, air‑cooled chillers)
Chilled water and liquid cooling architectures for high‑density data centres
Strong understanding of data centre cooling strategies, scalability, and modular deployment
In‑depth knowledge of data centre mechanical system architecture, including N, N+1, and 2N configurations
Experience & Background Essential
Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer within data centre or mission‑critical environments
Experience gained in large, complex organisations, such as hyperscalers, global consultancies, or tier‑one contractors
Strong background in hydraulics, stress modelling, and mechanical system analysis
Experience supporting projects end‑to‑end — from concept and detailed design through to commissioning
Comfortable working remotely within global project teams and engaging with senior technical stakeholders
Desirable
Experience working to internal hyperscale design standards
Exposure to commissioning, integrated systems testing, or operational handover
Familiarity with CFD or thermal modelling tools
Chartered Engineer status, or working towards chartership
