This includes but is not limited to e-houses, PDCs, control buildings, and modular substations deployed across the North American market.
This role is responsible for the mechanical assembly architecture and structural design of modular steel enclosures that house medium and low voltage electrical equipment. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in architectural, mechanical, or structural engineering, with hands-on experience in modular steel building construction methods comprised of interlocking panel systems and or crimp-plate assemblies.
Requirements
- Design wall, roof, floor, skid base, and stair/platform assemblies for modular building structures.
- Define connection details (bolted, welded, crimped, or hybrid) optimized for factory assembly and field erection.
- Produce and maintain detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings for prefabricated building assemblies.
- Utilize CAD and engineering tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent, ensuring alignment with company drafting standards and manufacturing best practices.
- Create and/or review structural calculations to support design decisions and code compliance.
- Ensure all designs and manufacturing/fabrication drawings meet applicable North American codes and standards (including IBC, ASCE 7 for wind/seismic/snow, AWS welding requirements, and AISC/AISI steel design standards).
Leadership & Technical Ownership
- Serve as the technical authority for the structural and mechanical design of prefabricated/modular steel buildings within the organization.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers on modular building design methods and industry best practices.
- Develop and maintain standard design details, drawing templates, and calculation tools to improve engineering efficiency and consistency.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts, R&D initiatives, and new product/platform development.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate directly with internal project execution partners (Project Management, Multi-Discipline Engineering, Procurement, and Manufacturing), external subcontractors (3rd party PE, HVAC, and Fire Protection), and client/end-user stakeholders.
- Resolve interdisciplinary design conflicts across structural, mechanical, architectural, and electrical interfaces.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Structural, Mechanical, Architectural Engineering, or related
- 5+ years in prefabricated/modular steel buildings (or closely related enclosure/skid structures)
- Working knowledge of steel framing (hot-rolled/cold-formed), panelized construction, and load/connection design
- AutoCAD proficiency
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with AHJ approval processes
- COMcheck / IECC / ASHRAE 90.1 experience
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit
- UL fire-rated wall assemblies (general purpose and hydrocarbon)
