George Walton Academy seeks an experienced Lower School Counselor. β€―The ideal candidate for this position will be skilled in counseling at the lower school level to work with grades K3 - 5th.

The counselor will work to build a strong foundation of social and emotional skills among our lower school students, equipping them for success in the classroom and in all aspects of their lives. Responsibilities include:

  • Provide individual counseling, small group counseling, and display comfort with parent/family communication.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and assist as necessary with classroom behavior or parent-teacher conferences.
  • Teach Social/Emotional Lessons on a rotation schedule.
  • Consult with Student Success Team. Attend meetings to discuss successes and barriers, assess progress, and collaborate for students with diagnosed learning differences.
  • Collaborate with Upper School/Middle School Counselor. Attend weekly meetings to review cases, discuss and implement programming goals, and monitor program data.
  • Maintain updated referral resources for educational assessments and private therapy as needed.
  • Identify at-risk students using program data and student records and review of specialized evaluations. Utilize data to develop student intervention plans, giving special attention to social-emotional development.
  • Respect and uphold professional standards regarding the confidentiality of student, family, and school concerns.
  • Engage in professional development, continued education, and stay up to date on local legal and ethical considerations within school counseling.
  • Maintain and utilize program specific data and student records to support students, families, and school counseling program.
  • Additional duties as assigned may include occasional lunch duty and carpool duty.

Minimum candidate qualifications:

  • Must hold a Master's Degree in school counseling or related field.
  • Must be reliable, a self-starter, well-organized, and a strong communicator.
