THE OPPORTUNITY
The City of Spruce Grove has one temporary, 4 month, full time position available for the Engineering Student – Capital Projects within the Sustainable Growth and Development department. Reporting to the Manager of Capital Projects, this position will be responsible for assisting the Capital Projects group across several key areas. The successful candidate will be involved in a wide variety of assignments, including but not limited to completing required GPS survey, working with consultants and contractors during peak construction season, and completing required AutoCad and cost estimate tasks. The Engineering Student will assist in the day-to-day tasks for the engineering department. They will be provided the opportunity to work with engineering/technical professionals who will support the student's development through coaching and mentoring assignments, and work in a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills, strong customer service skills, and be highly competent in exercising use of discretion, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with the public. Experience with municipal engineering standards and MS Office Suite are considered an asset.
The rate of this position is $23.62/hr for a 35 hour work week.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Capital Projects
- Assist in the day-to-day inspections for capital construction projects.
- Assist with the communications to the residents and businesses impacted by construction.
- Assist with design drawing and contract review.
- Assist in coordinating activity with contractors and consultants.
- Attend project site meetings.
- Assist with Construction Completion and Final Acceptance inspections.
- Provide input and produce construction progress reports.
- General AutoCad work and standard review.
- Contribute to the collection, processing, and interpretation of technical data related to capital projects.
Other Duties
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
- Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the "Values, We Live By".
- All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
- Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering diploma / degree program with at least one (1) year completed.
- General knowledge of Capital Project Civil construction theory and practices.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools required for the construction of municipal infrastructure.
- Reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
- Operate survey equipment such as GPS, rod/level and electronic distance measuring equipment.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with an inquisitive attitude towards work.
- Ability to prioritize and perform routine tasks and assignments, under close supervision or under clearly defined procedures.
- Ability to communicate and interact well both inside and outside the team to explain activities.
- Good organizational skills and highly committed to meeting deadlines.
- Ability to participate in, and contribute to, a productive and collaborative team environment.
- Strong attention to detail, and ability to balance competing priorities and tasks.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Class 5 Driver's License.
- Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver's Abstract, with a maximum of six demerits.
- Must have a CSA approved safety boots.
Working Environment:
- Monday to Friday
- Hours of Work: 8:30am to 4:30pm
- Working in an office and construction environment.
