Description
The CADCAM Technician is responsible for operating the digital production workflow within the dental laboratory. This includes managing 3D printing operations, performing desktop scanning, and communicating directly with customers regarding case status and digital file needs. This role ensures accurate, timely production of dental prosthetics through additive manufacturing technologies and supports a seamless workflow between design, fabrication, and customer service teams.

Key Responsibilities
3D Printing & Digital File Management
- Manage daily 3D printing operations, including setup, orientation, nesting, and processing of printed cases (models, try-ins, guides, dentures, etc.).
- Execute proper post-processing steps: washing, curing, support removal, and quality checks.
- Organize and manage incoming digital files, including STL, PLY, and DICOM formats.
- Attend training from team leads and managers; provide guidance and support to fellow team members when needed.
- Implement improvements in print workflows based on feedback from leadership.
Desktop Scanning
- Perform high-accuracy desktop scans of traditional impressions, models, and analog cases.
- Ensure proper file cleanup, alignment, and preparation for design.
- Maintain scanning equipment calibration and follow scanning best practices.
- Identify and escalate scan quality issues.
Customer Communication & Support
- Communicate with doctors and office staff regarding missing information, scan quality issues, resubmissions, and case requirements.
- Provide clear, professional guidance to customers on digital submission best practices.
- Track case progress and ensure customers receive timely updates.
- Work closely with Customer Service and Design teams to ensure complete, accurate case information.
Production Oversight
- Ensure efficient use of 3D printers, curing units, and scanning equipment.
- Monitor production schedules to meet internal and customer deadlines.
- Follow and maintain quality control procedures for printed and scanned work.
Technical Expertise
- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain 3D printers, wash & cure systems, and scanning equipment.
- Understand digital workflows involving CAD/CAM software, case management systems, and printer slicer tools.
- Stay current with industry advancements in additive manufacturing, resins, and digital dentistry.
Quality Assurance
- Inspect printed and scanned work to ensure it meets internal quality standards before passing along to the next shift or department.
- Identify defects or inconsistencies and make necessary corrections.
- Maintain logs for printing, scanning, quality control, and equipment performance.
Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with Design, Milling, Customer Service, and Quality Control departments to ensure a smooth digital workflow.
- Communicate effectively with the Digital Production Manager and team lead.
- Support fellow technicians and uphold clear communication practices within the department.
Inventory & Maintenance
- Assist in managing resin, model material, printing accessories, and scanning supplies.
- Perform routine cleaning, calibration, and preventive maintenance of 3D printing and scanning equipment.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and resin-handling regulations.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a dental lab or digital dental production environment, with a focus on 3D printing and/or digital scanning preferred
Skills and Competencies
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, desktop scanners, slicer programs, and 3D printers.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and precision.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially with customers.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues related to printers, scanners, and digital files.
- Knowledge of dental anatomy, dental materials, and prosthetic workflows is preferred.
