POSITION OVERVIEW

Monroe Public Schools is seeking an energetic, student-centered Elementary Physical Education Teacher to join the Custer Elementary team. The ideal candidate will foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where students build foundational motor skills, develop healthy habits, and experience the joy of physical activity. This educator will collaborate closely with staff, support whole-child development, and contribute to a positive school culture.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Physical Education (PE) endorsement(s).
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver standards-aligned instruction that supports diverse learners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, administration, students, and parents/guardians.
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to maintain a safe learning environment in a gymnasium and outdoor settings.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development, reflective practice, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to integrate social-emotional learning, teamwork, and sportsmanship into daily instruction.
  • Commitment to district initiatives, including restorative practices and positive behavior support systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching elementary physical education or working with young children in structured physical activity programs.
  • Familiarity with Michigan State Standards for Physical Education.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and inclusive strategies for students with behavioral or physical needs.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and deliver engaging PE lessons that promote physical fitness, motor skill development, coordination, and lifelong wellness.
  • Teach and model positive character traits such as teamwork, perseverance, and respect.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain appropriate records in alignment with district expectations.
  • Ensure student safety through active supervision, established routines, and proper equipment management.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and building administration to support student learning and behavioral needs.
  • Implement restorative practices and proactive behavior strategies when supporting students.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-supervised gymnasium and outdoor activity spaces.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with parents/guardians when needed.
  • Participate in meetings and professional learning opportunities.
  • Contribute to a positive school climate and support district initiatives.
