Job Summary
The Health & Human Services Agency, Public Health Services is currently accepting applications for
SENIOR EPIDEMIOLOGIST
Interviews and job offers will take place beginning the week of July 21, 2025.
Senior Epidemiologists are public health professionals responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating disease or prevention and injury detection programs and surveillance, as well as monitoring, reporting, evaluating, and controlling activities within the county. Under general supervision, incumbents plan, direct and coordinate the activities for several population-based health, disease or injury surveillance, investigations, evaluation, and control and prevention programs. Incumbents may supervise lower-level Epidemiologists and other professional level staff.
The current vacancy is in Maternal, Child, and Family Health Services; however, the eligible list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill vacancies in other departments.

HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins week of July 21, 2025. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Two (2) years of experience as an Epidemiologist II with the County of San Diego; OR,
  2. A master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in public health with specialization in epidemiology, bio-statistics, or a related field, AND, four (4) years of professional epidemiology experience.
Note: A Ph.D. in epidemiology, public health, life science or a closely related field from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, is highly desirable.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. EVALUATION PROCESS
Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in the supplemental questionnaire.
