Reports to: Lead attorney
Summary:
Olson and Olson, LLP is seeking a Paralegal to work for the litigation practice group. The Paralegal interfaces with the client and attorneys, assists with electronically maintaining documents, reviews correspondence and pleadings, drafts correspondence and pleadings, indexes documents, investigates facts, and performs a variety of other legal support duties as directed by the attorney.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Reviews Plaintiff's Original Petition, drafts Defendant's Original Answer, and calculates discovery deadlines according to the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure
Enter billable time on a daily basis
Prepares legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, contracts, initial and amended articles of incorporation, deeds, and trust instruments for review, approval, and use by attorney
Investigates facts of case to determine causes of action and to prepare case accordingly
Conducts file reviews including reviewing all pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and correspondence to learn the facts of the case
Reviews ownership history of the subject property and conducts deed research
Reviews previous litigation history, settlement offer history, Plaintiff's discovery responses, documents provided by Plaintiff in preparation for settlement conference, and owner's opinion of value
Research business records of named Plaintiffs with Secretary of State and Texas Comptroller
Proofreads and edits pleadings, motions, correspondence, and other documents prepared by supervising attorney
Prepares trial exhibits, trial notebook, trial preparation order and other materials needed for trial
Drafts correspondence to Plaintiff's counsel for attorney to review
Reviews and indexes documents produced in the discovery process
Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Outstanding time-management and typing skills
High attention to detail
Proficiency in grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Familiarity with legal documents and terminology
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks while meeting deadlines
Problem Solving/Analysis
Able to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Able to work as a team with attorneys and all support staff
Strong sense of discretion
Computer Skills:
Working knowledge of litigation management software systems is a plus
Proficiency with MS Office tools
Typing speed of at least 50 wpm with a high rate of accuracy
Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat
Required Education and Experience:
Undergraduate degree or 3 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Paralegal certification
Working Conditions and Environmental Consideration:
Indoor office environment
Requires sitting and using a computer for extended periods of time
May be required to move items up to 20 pounds
Overtime may be required to complete certain projects and meet deadlines
