Work Schedule

This is a temporary position effective January 14, 2026, through May 16, 2026. While the start date is flexible, the individual must be prepared to begin work no later than January 15, 2026. This role requires a commitment of at least 35 hours per week. While most shifts will occur Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM, occasional weekend hours will be required to support intramural events. The official weekly schedule will be determined in coordination with the immediate supervisor.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Campus Recreation provides a diverse and intentional recreational program in a safe, inclusive, and accessible environment which enhances the social, mental, and physical well-being of the entire University community. With this mission as the focus, Campus Recreation maintains several facilities around campus to help students stay active. In addition to the Rams Head Recreation Center and the Student Recreation Center, there is an indoor and outdoor pool, a number of outdoor courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball and paddle tennis, and lighted fields for sport club practices/matches and team intramural sports. Students have about 50 sport clubs and more than 40 intramural sports for men's, women's, and co-rec teams; in addition to a variety of aquatic and fitness classes/programs, expeditions, challenge course and climbing.

Position Summary

Program Assistants help to support the professional staff, and their responsibilities span administrative and on-field duties, including but not limited to assisting with the execution of student staff development & training, intramural and sports club programming, weekly or monthly staff updates, student meetings, and data collection and research. For this student leadership position, there will be specific roles as well as some general office duties that the Program Assistants oversee and are responsible for.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with creating and leading student development workshops and trainings for staff
  • Assist with organizing intramural leagues, divisions, and schedules
  • Supervise nightly intramural and sports club weekly and weekend programming events
  • Collect nightly team default/forfeit information, and use it to update the schedule and staff
  • Nominate staff members and select monthly awards for staff members
  • Understand and enforce UNC Campus Recreation policies and guidelines, including the Emergency Action Plan
  • Develop professional relationships with coworkers, participants and guests
  • Assist with sports club administrative duties
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise Sports Programs employees
  • Utilize software and databases, including Microsoft Teams, DSE, IMLeagues, WhentoWork
  • Uphold and exceed the expectations of Campus Recreation, including ethical reasoning, critical thinking, teamwork, initiative, and professionalism
  • Carry out the expectations of professional staff when tasked

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Prior work experience with Campus Recreation and administration of Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs programming.
  • Officiating experience in football, basketball, soccer, or volleyball.
  • High School, Associate's Degree, or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills, proven written and organization skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
