POSITION: DAY SHIFT CUSTODIAN Location: Harrison Elementary School
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months – 40 hour work week as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent
Previous experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in the custodial service at other
institutions and firms preferred
Able to communicate and understand simple written and oral instructions in English
Able to perform all of the housekeeping functions and duties listed
Able to perform such tasks as scouring sinks, furnishings, equipment, polishing mirrors,
dusting furniture and mopping floors
Able to effectively operate vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, and other custodial equipment
Able to effectively navigate and operate phone, computer and district software
Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
REPORTS TO: Head Custodian
JOB GOAL: Provide students, teachers, and the community with a safe, clean, attractive,
comfortable and efficient environment in which to learn and teach
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
⮚ Perform all tasks as assigned by the Director of Facility Operations, Principal, Building
Services Coordinator, or Head Custodian
⮚ Perform repeated tasks in maintaining an assigned area of the District in an orderly, safe, and
clean condition
⮚ Clean assigned areas by dusting furnishings, washing floors, and equipment with special cleaning
solutions. Empty wastebaskets and arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion. Scour and
polish sinks, shower areas, water fountains, mirrors, and similar equipment. Stock supplies of
soap, paper towels, and other dispensable items
⮚ Report any mechanical failures or negative conditions as observed in the assigned area to
supervisor
⮚ Participate in completion of assigned work orders
⮚ Initiate work orders when administration/staff inquires with a new or unusual task
⮚ Function independently as applicable to assigned work
⮚ When requested to participate in a crew activity, do so willingly
⮚ Maintain your area with a sense of pride as it represents what you do
⮚ Be a good example to students and community users as you represent the school

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
DAILY PROCEDURES
⮚ Classrooms:
✓ All hard surface floors will be dust mopped. The floor will be free of all debris including
edging and corners
✓ All furnishings will be free of graffiti, gum, and dust
✓ Spots and gum on all floor coverings will be removed upon discovery
✓ Remove stains from walls, especially around wastebaskets, pencil sharpeners, and light
switches
✓ Remove all tape on walls
✓ Clean and sanitize all sinks, drinking fountains, and faucets
⮚ Restrooms/locker rooms
✓ Wear disposable gloves
✓ Clean and disinfect locker room fixtures and floors
✓ Clean and sanitize toilet bowl, urinals, and hand basins
✓ Use approved sanitizer on sinks and generously rinse
✓ Mirrors will be fingerprint and smudge free
✓ Walls/lockers will be graffiti free. Profanity, obscenity, and gang related material shall be
removed immediately upon discovery
✓ Dust ledges, fixtures, etc., and remove cobwebs
✓ Refill all dispensers to normal limits including tissue, paper towels, liners, soap dispensers,
etc.
⮚ Corridors/Stairwells/Entrances
✓ Wash all door glass daily
✓ Dry mop/vacuum all carpeted floors and mats
✓ Remove graffiti from lockers and/or walls
✓ Wet mop as needed. The floor will be free of all debris including edging and corners
✓ Drinking fountains will be free of water deposits, streaks, and dust. The mouthpiece, basin, and
exterior will be sanitized daily
✓ Both sides of door glass will be free of tape, fingerprints, and smudges
✓ Lock and unlock doors at appointed times
⮚ Student and faculty cafeterias/ lounges
✓ Drinking fountains will be free of water deposits, streaks, and dust. The mouthpiece, basin, and
exterior will be sanitized daily
✓ Set-up and break-down of student seating
✓ Clean and sanitize all tabletops and seats
✓ Trash receptacles shall be emptied sanitized, and liners replaced
✓ Interior glass in partitions, doors, and all other interior windows shall be free of
fingerprints, streaks, and smudges
✓ Vacuum all carpeted floors and mats

✓ Dust and remove all smudges and fingerprints from doors daily
✓ Bleachers must be maintained free of debris, dust, and gum
✓ Bleachers will be free of graffiti
✓ Spots and gum will be removed from gym floor
✓ Trash receptacles will be emptied; replace liner when torn or dirty
✓ Cobwebs removed and window sills will be free of dust and debris
✓ Sanitize and polish water fountains
PROCEDURES FOR CLEANING UP BODILY FLUID SPILLS
THESE PROCEDURES SHOULD BE USED FOR ALL BODY FLUID SPILLS REGARDLESS OF THE INDIVIDUAL'S INFECTIOUS
DISEASE STATUS
Definition:
A body fluid spill is a discharge of blood, feces, urine, semen, vaginal secretions, or vomitus
that does not involve touch with eye, mouth, other mucous membrane, non-intact skin, or other
parenteral contact
✓ Wear disposable gloves. When gloves are not available, or unanticipated contact occurs, hands
and other affected areas should be washed with soap and running temperate water
✓ Clean and disinfect all hard, soiled, washable surfaces immediately, removing soil before
applying disinfectant
o Small Spills: Use paper towels or tissues to wipe up soiled areas. After soil is removed, use
clean paper towels, soap and water to clean area. Dispose of paper towels in a plastic bag.
Disinfect area
o Large Spills: Apply commercial sanitary absorbent agent on soiled area. After soil is absorbed,
sweep all material into a plastic bag, taking care not to create any dust emissions
✓ Clean and disinfect soiled rugs and carpets, immediately by one of the following
methods: o If one of the hospital or industrial-grade wet extractors (Little George) is available
Apply commercial sanitary absorbent agent on soiled area
After soil is absorbed, carefully extract with hospital-grade wet extractor – DO NOT USE A VACUUM AT THIS STAGE
Disinfect area with a compatible disinfectant
Apply a bacteriostatic rug shampoo, follow label directions.
Brush and allow to dry
Vacuum area
o If one of the hospital or industrial-grade wet extractors is unavailable:
Apply commercial sanitary absorbent agent on soiled area. Carefully scoop or scrape into a
plastic grade while still wet
Disinfect area with a compatible disinfectant
Apply a bacteriostatic rug shampoo, follow label directions.
Brush and allow to dry
Vacuum area
✓ Clean and disinfect equipment according to manufacturer's directions. Dispose of all disposable
materials
o Flushable soiled tissues and waste may be flushed in toilet. Discard paper towels, vacuum bag,
and sweepings in a covered waste receptacle lined with a plastic bag
o Wash broom and dust pan in disinfectant solution
o Soak mop in disinfectant solution and rinse thoroughly or wash in hot water cycle after soaking
in disinfectant
o Disinfectant solution and waste from hospital grade wet vacuum extractor should be promptly
disposed of in a sanitary sewer
✓ Clothing and other non-disposable items (e.g., sheets, towels) soiled with body fluids and/or
secretions should be placed in a plastic bag to be sent home or laundered
✓ Remove gloves. Discard disposable gloves in covered waste receptacle
✓ Wash hands
✓ Plastic bags holding contaminated waste should be secured and disposed of daily
✓ Large waste containers containing potentially contaminated waste (covered dumpsters or other
covered containers which are impervious to animals) should be located in a safe area away from the
playground or other areas used by students

MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES
✓ Remove snow and salt from entrance doors area
✓ Check operation and locks of all panic hardware on doors, classrooms, etc.
✓ Raise and lower flags on special occasions when instructed by Facilities Office
✓ Wash all first floor windows on the outside as weather permits
✓ Wash all inside windows on weekly basis or as needed
✓ Make minor repairs in all areas.
✓ Report major repairs immediately to supervisor or initiate a work order
✓ Immediately report to the school principal and Director of Facility Operations any damage to school property
✓ Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day/night and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
✓ Keep an inventory of supplies and equipment, and requisition such needed replacements from the
supervisor far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as to maintain your area
✓ Keep copier paper stocked at building's copiers
✓ Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair
✓ Move furniture or equipment within the buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal. Do not move excessively heavy furniture
✓ Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste
✓ Maintain all machinery (floor machines, water vacs, etc.) used in the performance of your job
✓ Accept and unload deliveries to each building
✓ Comply with the Green Cleaning act of 2007 by using only district issued products
✓ Comply with the Integrated Pest Management Program by reporting any and all pest sightings. Work order needs to be issued and building's IPM book must be updated.

ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Work consists of considerable walking and standing. Kneeling and crouching required performing such cleaning functions as washing bathroom fixtures and cleaning tasks. Hands are frequently in contact with glass, water, and cleaning and/or disinfectant solutions.
Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in heavy work, typically involving some
combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials up to 50 pounds.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and depths. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Visual sharpness needed when cleaning, dusting, and polishing to make sure that work is being done correctly.

Environmental factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions; such as wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, electrical currents, bright or dim lighting, etc.
