Position Overview

 
As a Material Handler in our Fabrication Department, you will play a crucial role in the efficient flow of materials across the yard, ensuring the seamless movement of structural steel, stock, and other materials. Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, your responsibilities include safe equipment operation, material handling, and hazard identification to maintain a safe and productive environment. 

Responsibilities 

  • Material Transportation: Safely move freight, stock, and materials between storage areas, production zones, loading docks, and delivery vehicles, either manually or using equipment such as trucks and tractors. 
  • Cargo Organization: Sort and prepare cargo for loading or unloading, ensuring materials are correctly placed and ready for the next stage. 
  • Identification & Tagging: Attach identification tags to materials or mark them clearly with the appropriate information for efficient processing and tracking. 
  • Work Order Compliance: Follow work orders and verbal instructions to complete tasks accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • Quality Assurance: Inspect products to ensure they meet established quality standards and immediately report any inconsistencies. 
  • Equipment Operation: Start and operate machinery or equipment to assist with production processes, contributing to the overall productivity of the shop. 
  • Tools & Equipment Operation: 
  • Basic Tools: Proficient in using hand tools like hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, and tape measures. 
  • Heavy Equipment: Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and overhead cranes. 
  • Specialized Machinery: Familiarity with wrapping machinery, banding machines, and mechanical technologies such as tool and equipment design, use, and maintenance. 
  • Technology: Basic computer and office software skills are a plus but not required. 
  • Routine Inspections: Perform regular equipment checks, reporting issues promptly to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency. 

Qualifications

  • Must have forklift experience
  • Safety-First Attitude: Strong commitment to safety, consistently utilizing proper safety gear and following safety protocols. 
  • Valid Driver's License: Must hold a valid driver's license. 
  • Willingness to Train: Must be willing to complete OSHA 10 training upon being hired. 
  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is highly preferred. 
  • Team-Oriented: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating self-motivation and reliability. 

Important Notes

  • This is a safety-sensitive position. In accordance with JGM's safety policy and applicable regulations, individuals actively using medical marijuana are not eligible for this role.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a drug screening, including testing for marijuana, prior to starting employment. 

Work Environment

As a Material Handler, you will perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects. Your work may take place outdoors in various weather conditions. You may be exposed to hazardous materials, loud noises, and dangerous machinery, requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, hardhats, protective suits, and respiratory devices. Workers must exercise caution and be adept at identifying and mitigating potential hazards to ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others.
