Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Planning Technician to support a wide range of land-use planning activities. The ideal candidate will assist with project research, field data collection, mapping, and analysis while utilizing GIS tools to support long-range planning and day-to-day development review.
Summary
The Planning Department Planning Technician performs routine entry level duties in support of daily Planning and Zoning Department functions; oversees and administers day-to-day activities and functions of the Planning Department Office. This position requires someone who works cooperatively and effectively with the public and other employees in a very busy and sometime stressful office environment. Serves as the assistant to the Planner. The Planning Technician will attend Planning and Zoning Commission meetings on the second Tuesday of the month in the evening.
Duties
Advise community members regarding county land use polices and codes.
Coordination of land use applications and completeness reviews, interagency, and interdepartmental reviews.
Communicate with applicants, stakeholders, property owners, state agencies, county department and others involved in the review process.
Coordinate public hearings; prepares public notices and conducts property ownership verifications.
Provide technical assistance and information to staff and the public in the administration of specific planning regulations.
Research and compile information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources.
Conduct field inspections to collect pertinent site condition information and check for permit compliance.
Prepare and update various land use and planning maps.
Utilize geographic information systems (GIS) to generate computerized maps.
Develop, organize, and maintain hardcopy and electronic files and records.
Perform routine office tasks including answering phone calls, emails, file management, and data entry
Operate a variety of office machines and use a variety of software including, but not limited to, Access, Excel, Word, and mapping software.
Cooperate and work with other County Departments.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Licensure, and Experience
Associates Degree with emphasis in planning, geography, construction management, business, sciences, or a related field and 1 (one) year of related experience.
High School Diploma or equivalent required and 3 (three) years or related experience OR
Education and/or experience equivalent/comparable to 1 and/or 2.
Current Wyoming State Driver's License.
Skills
Knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations used in land use planning.
Knowledge of research methods and the ability to compile data.
Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, and drawings.
Ability to read, interpret, and apply work related codes, legal property descriptions and other regulations.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Problem solving and research skills.
Strong computer skills to carry out daily work assignments
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff from other county departments and the general public.
Knowledge of customer service techniques.
Plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines.
Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.
Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
Knowledge of GIS platforms such as ArcView and ArcGIS for spatial data analysis.
Pay: $ $21.60 per hour
