JOB SUMMARY: In this role, you will help sustain Mennel's tradition of excellence established in 1886 as well as support our food safety programs and mission to reliably deliver superior quality, uniformity, and service.The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading all engineering activities at the Toledo facility. This role oversees capital projects, continuous improvement initiatives, equipment reliability, and long-term infrastructure planning. The manager will supervise plant engineers and collaborate closely with operations, quality, and maintenance teams to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective manufacturing.

PRIMARY WORK SHIFT:

Monday through Friday 7AM – 4PM. Can vary depending on workload.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for planning, developing, executing, and managing engineering projects and improvement initiatives across the Toledo plant.
  • Oversees the engineering function and provides direction, guidance, and support to plant engineers and technical staff.
  • Implements Mennel engineering standards for construction, equipment, electrical hardware, sanitary design, and installation.
  • Evaluates and recommends improvements to plant processes, equipment, and infrastructure to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Exercises strong financial stewardship by adhering to established budgets and controlling costs associated with engineering projects and activities.

  • Collaborates with corporate engineering, operations, and maintenance teams on project development to ensure alignment with schedule, scope, and budget expectations.

  • Leads project development activities including project concepts, scopes of work, technical documentation, drawings, cost estimates, proposals, and contractor coordination.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously and ensures consistent progress while maintaining plant support responsibilities.
  • Ensures all engineering projects follow Mennel's Management of Change process where applicable.
  • Uses the Mennel Corporate Mission, Quality, and Safety Statements as guiding principles in all decision-making.
  • Directs and coordinates project work in accordance with company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Ensures work is completed safely, cleanly, and in compliance with all personnel safety, food safety, and housekeeping expectations.
  • Serves as an engineering resource for plant leadership and supports problem-solving and troubleshooting activities.
  • Must work independently and demonstrate strong self-management and initiative.
  • Requires strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Must be technically competent and familiar with plant systems, utilities, equipment, and industry technology.
  • Expected to stay current on engineering best practices, technology trends, and process improvements relevant to the milling and food industry.
  • Required to maintain regular communication with Corporate Engineering to ensure alignment with Operations Group goals and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the direction, management, and development of the engineering department staff at the Toledo facility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.

  • A college degree from a 4-year institution in engineering or operations management field is required.
  • 6–10 years of progressive engineering and/or operations experience in a manufacturing environment is required; experience in the food manufacturing industry is strongly preferred.
  • Must possess strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent technical writing, speaking, and presentation abilities.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, procedures and plans. Ability to write, complete checklists and other basic documentation and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information or data in one-on-one and small group situations to co-workers, supervisors, and managers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Must use solid judgment when making decisions. Must have ability to quickly recognize and plan for changing work duties and events.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to conditions that are typical to a fast- paced manufacturing environment, including: moving equipment and machinery, dusty, hot/humid, and cold conditions; employee must be willing to work in all weather conditions, at heights, and in the presence of airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment usually requires the use of hearing protection. Work involves exposure to common wheat allergens.
