MAG received FEMA funding to hire an intern to assist in the development of a Disaster Mitigation Plan for Wasatch and Utah counties.  The primary role of the Community Planning Intern will be to support the development and implementation of this plan, including tracking city compliance with state requirements. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in various other community planning studies and planning initiatives, such as small area plans, corridor plans, active transportation plans, and similar efforts. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in emergency management, community engagement, and urban planning within a governmental setting. The intern will work closely with city staff, community organizations, and various stakeholders to enhance the resilience against natural and human-made hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate City Staff and Community Organizations: Collaborate with various city departments and local community organizations to integrate their efforts into the disaster mitigation plan. This includes facilitating communication, scheduling meetings, and ensuring alignment of objectives.
  • Assist in Disaster Mitigation Meetings: Support meetings with representatives from every city in Utah and Wasatch counties. This involves preparing meeting agendas, taking minutes, contacting participants, and assisting with presentations. These meetings are crucial for regional coordination and information sharing.
  • Research Hazard-Related Plans: Review existing hazard-related plans from other jurisdictions to identify best practices, understand current capabilities, and explore effective mitigation strategies. This research will inform the ongoing development of the Disaster Mitigation Plan and enrich small-area meetings.
  • Review City Code: Read and analyze relevant sections of the city code to understand existing regulations related to land use, building standards, and emergency procedures that impact disaster mitigation efforts.
  • Support Planning Technical Assistance Projects: Participate in various plans and studies needed by local governments to address growth and development-related challenges effectively. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • GIS and Mapmaking Familiarity: Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapmaking software is highly preferred. This skill will be valuable for visualizing hazard data, mapping vulnerable areas, and creating effective mitigation strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interest in emergency management, urban planning, public administration, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with City Code
