Location: Bus Garage
Pay Rate: $26.60/hr. A one-time $1,500.00 signing bonus will be awarded to newly hired drivers after the newly hired driver has worked for three consecutive months during the term of the agreement.
Summary
This position is responsible for the safe transportation of students over specified routes according to a time schedule. The driver in this position must comply with traffic regulations, along with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- Must possess a valid CDL license with "S" endorsement and have a safe driving record.
- Must possess a school bus permit.
- Must have no points on driving record and be able to pass physical including drug tests (random DOT regulation testing).
- Previous experience as a school bus driver is preferred.
Essential Functions

- Drives a school bus safely and professionally.
- Performs and properly completes daily pre-trip inspections.
- Complies with all traffic ordinances.
- Complies with discipline policies set forth in the School Code of Conduct for Transportation.
- Participates in on-site training.
- Shows proficiency in handling and maneuvering a school bus.
- Manage student behavior professionally.
- Always present yourself professionally in appearance and behavior.
- Maintain designated route and schedule.
- Communicate with school staff and parents.
- Maintain a clean, free of hazards and projectiles school bus.
- The ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues that supports a cooperative work environment. Must have effective and positive communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Language Skills
Communicates clearly both in oral and written format with all constituents of the District 113 community. Effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups. Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with students, guardians, staff and the school community. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Mathematical and Technical Skills
Basic arithmetic, time management, scheduling, distance & speed calculations, passenger counting & capacity planning. Vehicle inspection knowledge, ability to follow maps and routing sheets, mechanical awareness, defensive driving & safety procedures, ability to operate a two way radio & radio communication system properly.
Must have computer skills to access district emails, information and training.
Reasoning Ability
Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of verbal and written instructions and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.
Contacts Outside Your Own Department
Build positive relationships with constituents of the District 113 community that includes colleagues, students, guardians, teachers, school staff, administrative team, and the Board of Education.
Physical and Mental Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach above the shoulders,, write, type, and taste or smell.
- The employee will be required to climb up to 3 foot height up to six times a day.
- Reaching arms distance multiple times a day, walking up to 30 minutes a day up to 100 foot distances up to six times a day.
- Sitting five hours per day on a cushioned bus seat while operating a school bus.
- or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach or crawl.The employee is regularly required to communicate with staff and others.
- The employee is frequently required to use hands and/or fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls to operate bus;
- This employee is required to listen, hear, speak to exchange information.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Specific psychological demands of this job include the ability to remain calm under stress levels associated with job demands, along with constant contact with students, colleagues and the public.
Working Conditions
- Work in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.
- The noise level in the bus environment is usually moderate with regular exposure to traffic, loud children,.
- The employee is regularly required to meet deadlines with time constraints and interact with the public and staff.
- The employee frequently has the opportunity to work irregular or extended work hours, which may include evenings or weekends.

As a part of the District workforce, this role is responsible for being aware of, modeling and contributing to the maintenance and implementation of all District safety policies and procedures. The role is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
