The External Affairs Commission deals with student issues related to advocacy for students on a university, municipal, provincial, and federal level. In this pursuit, the Commission lobbies and advocates internally within the university administration while also lobbying externally to raise awareness about government policies regarding post-secondary education, as well as municipal issues pertaining to student life. The Academic Affairs Manager acts as a resource to the Academic Grievance Centre, AMS member societies, and students-at-large, and works on a variety of academic advocacy initiatives.

Job Duties
Develop a thorough understanding of academic appeals processes and academic regulations at Queen's to act as a resource to the Academic Grievance Centre, AMS member societies, and students-at-large as necessary
Respond to student inquiries directed to the Academic Grievance Centre as required through the academic year
Disseminate information to the student body regarding academic appeals, and other academic administration procedures or concerns as they arise
Assist with or assume academic advocacy initiatives directed at Queen's administrators as delegated by or in collaboration with the Commissioner of External Affairs
Ensure that volunteers and/or employees adhere to all health and safety regulations
Monitor volunteer and/or employee performance to mitigate disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures and notify Commissioner of any issues that arise
Exhibit a working knowledge of volunteer's portfolios while ensuring work is being performed according to established standards
Ensure all student needs are addressed and handled professionally
Assist with new volunteer training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging coaching as needed
Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high stress
Maintain positive working relationships with relevant stakeholders related to all portfolios
Assist the Commissioner in the development of a goal plan, budget, mid-year review, and any relevant capital expenditure proposals (EDIT)
Coordinate activities with the Commissioner by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and delegating work accordingly
Participate as an active member on hiring panels to keep the service adequately staffed
Ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and ethical standards
Attend and fully participate in all in person and virtual meetings
Maintain consistent communication with all relevant stakeholders, responding to e-mails in a timely manner
Complete a thorough transition process with the incoming manager that includes one on one meetings and a transition manual
Complete other duties as assigned
