POSITION SUMMARY

The General Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day and monthly accounting operations of the organization. Reporting to the Controller, this role is accountable for accurate financial data entry, account reconciliations, reporting, and supporting payroll and cash management processes.

The individual will bring strong knowledge of accounting principles and attention to detail, along with a collaborative and proactive approach to problem-solving. This role contributes to the financial integrity of the organization by ensuring timely and accurate reporting and working closely with the broader finance and operations teams

KEY RESPONSBILITIES

  • Prepare and complete month-end and year-end close procedures, including journal entries and accruals.
  • Perform general ledger account reconciliations and financial analysis to ensure accuracy and identify variances.
  • Support preparation of internal financial reports for management review and decision-making.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with ASPE and internal reporting standards.
  • Maintain documentation and working papers to support reconciliations and audit readiness.
  • Complete regular bank account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
  • Monitor and manage daily cash balances, ensuring adequate liquidity for operational needs.
  • Support the Controller in cash forecasting and cash flow reporting activities.
  • Review and analyze accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions to ensure timely processing and collections.
  • Assist with payroll processing and reconciliations, ensuring accuracy in employee compensation and deductions.
  • Prepare remittances for payroll-related government filings, as required.
  • Maintain financial records related to payroll and benefits in collaboration with HR.
  • Provide support on various accounting tasks including data entry, vendor setup, invoice coding, and expense tracking.
  • Respond to accounting-related inquiries from internal departments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain and utilize accounting software (e.g. SAGE 50, QuickBooks) to manage financial data and generate reports.
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of data entry in financial systems.
  • Work with the Controller to identify opportunities to streamline accounting workflows and enhance reporting tools.
  • Demonstrate adaptability in learning new technologies and finance-related software.
  • Support implementation of new processes, tools, and systems as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a general accounting or finance-related role.
  • Experience with payroll processes and financial reporting cycles.
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • Working toward CPA designation (considered an asset).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Comfortable working in a team environment with cross-functional collaboration.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage time and multiple tasks effectively.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position works a Monday – Friday at the BGI Corporate Office in Ancaster, Ontario. Standard office hours with occasional extended hours during reporting cycles.
