Reporting to the Supervisor of Sportsfields and Grounds Maintenance, through the Parks Working Foreperson or Sportsfield Technician, the Parks Maintenance Worker is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of municipal parks and open spaces. This includes sportsfields, playgrounds, recreational trails, and associated park infrastructure. The role delivers high-quality turf care for programmed sportsfields and provides direction to assigned seasonal and student staff.Job Duties Include
The responsibilities and duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Works with Sportsfield Technician and Working Foreperson to deliver annual workplans and levels of service relating to the daily maintenance of all programmed sportsfields, including mowing, fertilizing, aerating, overseeding, spraying, dragging, watering, lining, edging.
- Repairs and maintains trail and playground surfaces, ensures work orders and service levels are met for playgrounds, trails, and splashpads.
- Maintains athletic turf fields (including artificial turf fields) daily and reports conditions relating to insects, fungus, disease etc. that present themselves on any programmed sportsfield to the Sportsfield technician.
- Provides high quality grounds maintenance services within the Town's parks and open space system, as well as at Town facilities.
- Works with supervisor and identifies treatments, authorized in the Province of Ontario.
- Works with the Sportsfield Technician to operate and manage the Town's central irrigation system, measuring moisture content within the turf fields and respond to changing weather conditions and forecasts.
- Operates turf/maintenance equipment including mowers, over-seeders, tractors, aerators, top-dressers, edge cutters, fertilizer sprayers, drag mats and bunker rakes.
- Operates various types of equipment such as loaders, mowers, tractors, 5-ton single axle dump trucks and mini-sweeper.
- Perform a variety of maintenance functions during the winter control season such as but not limited to snow clearing, salting of: sidewalks, trails, parking lots.
- Assists Gardeners and Arborists and performs activities of an Environmental Services Worker from time to time.
Qualifications/Skills
- Successful completion of Secondary School or an equivalent approved combination of education and experience.
- Minimum (2) years of turf/grounds maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience with the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Minimum (2) seasons of winter maintenance experience including the plowing and salting of sidewalks, parking lots and/or trails, using appropriate equipment.
- Playground practitioner certification considered an asset.
- General understanding of the Municipal Act, and the relevant references to road maintenance (ie. Minimum Maintenance Standards) as well as an understanding the of Occupation Health and Safety Act.
- Demonstrated ability to operate small to heavy construction and maintenance equipment effectively and efficiently.
- Good organization, time management and planning skills.
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class 'D' driver's license with 'Z' endorsement and clean driver's abstract.
- Upon being hired, ability to provide a current criminal reference check satisfactory to the Town of Ajax.

- Compensation : We offer competitive pay that reflects the responsibilities of the position.
- Hours of Work : This is a unionized position that works 40 hours per week. The hours of work are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement. For the purposes of winter control (November 15th – April 15th) this position will be placed on Winter Standby and will be required to be available for winter call-out purposes, in accordance with the collective agreement.
