JOB DESCRIPTION
The Senior Project Engineer collaborates closely with sales, engineering, and operations teams to identify, develop, design, and deliver energy and water conservation projects for our clients. This is a customer-facing role responsible for developing detailed energy and water conservation scopes of work across multiple vertical markets and geographic regions with quantified costs and energy savings. These scopes are presented as proposed projects and executed as turnkey installations.
The role includes travel to perform site surveys and support project execution. Field duties involve a variety of testing and data capture methods, including electronic data collection, digital and infrared photography, ultrasound testing, LIDAR scanning, and detailed field documentation to support project development.
The Senior Project Engineer also functions as a project manager, coordinating subcontractors, specifying equipment, overseeing installation activities, supporting commissioning, and providing on-site support as needed.
The role requires the ability to perform physical site walkdowns and access mechanical spaces, rooftops, basements, and industrial environments safely. A home office environment is required for proposal and report development, engineering design, data analysis, and project management activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Adhere to SMI safety rules and ensure compliance
· Conduct site surveys/audits/walkdowns/LIDAR scanning in a safe and professional manner
· Develop energy conservation measures (ECMs), typically for performance contracts
· Model costs and savings for developed scopes of work
· Size and select required components and capital equipment
· CAD design (2D & 3D) and drawing development as required for engineering deliverables
· Manage project implementation
· Maintain organized project folders
· Work with and understand operations department functions and stakeholders
· Interact with customer personnel to gain knowledge of scope and access to work areas
· Maintain written project updates to SMI sales, engineering, operations, and clients
· Uphold Steam Management's Standards of Quality and Excellence
· Other related duties as assigned
· Travel as needed (approximately 50% average)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) or related field
· 7+ years of relevant engineering, project engineering, or project delivery experience
· Experience with energy performance contracts (preferred), energy management, or utility rebate programs.
· Hands-on testing, piping, or mechanical skills, including experience in steam systems
· Project management experience with subcontractor coordination and field execution
· Client-facing experience in technical or consulting environments
· Proficiency in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, Project); high proficiency in Excel required
· Experience in process design (P&IDs, PFDs, heat and mass balance, equipment selection, energy calculations, etc.) preferred
· Experience in AutoCAD Plant 3D or similar
· Equipment surveying experience - steam traps, insulation, compressed air, LIDAR scanning
· Ability to work independently and remotely on projects
· Proven ability to drive tasks forward while awaiting necessary information
· Strong technical writing skills (proposals, assessment reports, engineered scopes of work)
· Professional demeanor and strong ability to collaborate effectively with all project stakeholders
