SUNY Schenectady County Community College is seeking a full-time Academic Specialist in the TRIO Student Support Services program. TRIO Student Support Services at SUNY Schenectady is a student-centered service that provides comprehensive support for eligible students. TRIO empowers first-generation college students, income-eligible students, and students with disabilities to explore and achieve their academic, career, financial, and personal goals. TRIO staff use a variety of resources, support, advocacy, leadership services, and programming to guide students in successfully navigating their college experience. Students in the TRIO program increase their opportunity to graduate, and pursue further degrees and elevated career opportunities. The TRIO program is free to students, and is funded through a U.S. Department of Education grant.
Academic Specialists are a professional (unrepresented), full-time, grant-funded position. Academic Specialists are a critical student-facing role, and maintain the programming and services necessary to support student success. This position reports to the Director of TRIO Student Support Services.
Responsibilities:
Manages a portfolio of student participants, including regular meetings, outreach, and maintenance of student records
Coordinates intake process for eligible students, including learning and study skill assessment and development of individualized success plan
Provides academic support to participating students, including tutoring, coaching, and course selection guidance
Provides personal support to participating students, including mentoring, career guidance, and referrals to campus and community agencies
Works closely with teaching faculty and other student support staff, collaborating and consulting on issues pertinent to TRIO students
Coordinates proactive and early interventions designed to provide wrap-around support for students in need
Coordinates series of skill-building and personal development workshops for participants each semester
Assists in the management of surveys and program data
Acquires and maintains knowledge of services, resources, and opportunities on campus and in the community
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, education, social work, human services, sociology, or another field closely aligned with student support or human development
A minimum of one year of experience working with a broad range of student populations
Experience with Microsoft Office
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in counseling, psychology, education, or related field
Experience working in a community college setting
Experience teaching or tutoring writing or math
Knowledge of learning strategies that support students with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, including disabilities
Experience in adult and non-traditional education
Experience with teaching or tutoring English to Speakers of Other Languages
Experience with Early Alert Systems, and a college Learning Management System (i.e. Brightspace, Blackboard, etc.)
