About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to join our team remotely within the United States. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing, developing, and maintaining scalable data streaming and processing solutions that support our enterprise data ecosystem. This role involves working closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to deliver robust data pipelines, data warehouses, and certified datasets that meet business intelligence and analytics needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering, a passion for innovative data solutions, and a commitment to data security and compliance. You will be part of a collaborative team that values safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement, contributing to projects that impact millions of users and support the operational excellence of BNSF Railway.

Qualifications

  • Authorized to work in the US
  • Ability to work now and in the future without BNSF's assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, database management, or relevant fields
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, and Java
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts including dimensional modeling and star schema
  • Experience with ETL processes and cloud-based solutions
  • Familiarity with database management systems (SQL, NoSQL) and modern lakehouse technologies (Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Apache Trino)
  • Experience with data streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Apache Flink, and Apache Spark
  • Proven ability to develop data pipelines, data orchestration, and certified datasets
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to learn new technical concepts rapidly and adapt to changing environments
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally in oral and written formats

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement efficient data streaming solutions to process real-time data streams
  • Develop and maintain robust data pipelines for both real-time and batch processing, including extraction, transformation, and load (ETL) processes
  • Create and manage large-scale data warehouses to facilitate quick data access and retrieval for analytics and reporting
  • Integrate data from diverse sources to produce certified datasets ensuring accuracy, consistency, and reliability
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver tailored solutions
  • Optimize data workflows, monitor data pipelines, and troubleshoot issues to ensure high performance and scalability
  • Ensure compliance with data security standards and industry regulations
  • Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in data engineering, data science, and machine learning
  • Write efficient, well-documented code with comprehensive unit tests and documentation
  • Lead the integration of data engineering solutions into production environments, including solution design, development, testing, and monitoring
