Position Description & DetailsBismarck State College is seeking a thoughtful and solutions-minded Institutional Data Analyst to join our Institutional Effectiveness team. This role plays a key part in supporting planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement across the college. The position is fully in-person with no remote work option.
Key Responsibilities
The Institutional Data Analyst will:
- Support the development and execution of data strategies that inform institutional planning and strengthen student success.
- Partner closely with team members and campus stakeholders to understand operational needs and translate them into scalable data and automation solutions.
- Design, build, and maintain interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI and other business intelligence tools.
- Develop predictive models that forecast enrollment, identify at-risk students, and guide resource allocation.
- Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
- Work with campus units to spot opportunities for workflow automation and low-code application development.
- Create and manage data collection forms and online survey tools to streamline reporting.
- Safeguard data quality through audits, validation practices, and collaboration with Information Technology Solutions Services.
- Produce recurring reports on key metrics, enrollment patterns, and student outcomes.
- Offer training and support to promote data literacy and effective use of BI resources.
- Stay current with emerging analytics and automation technologies in higher education and recommend innovative solutions.
- Collect and organize data from institutional systems, surveys, and multiple sources to support comprehensive analysis.
- Recommend improvements to data collection and analysis processes campus-wide.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to strengthen data, automation, and higher-education expertise.
- Maintain a strong focus on student success in all aspects of analysis and reporting.

- Assist with documenting data processes, reporting standards, and automation workflows.
- Contribute to committees or task forces related to data governance, technology, or strategic planning.
- Support accreditation, compliance, and grant reporting needs.
- Perform other duties aligned with team goals and institutional priorities.
- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or an associate degree and two years of directly related experience.
- Proven experience as a data analyst, business intelligence technologist, process automation specialist, or information systems analyst, with proficiency in integrating and analyzing data from multiple sources (e.g., databases, Excel, SharePoint).
- Strong skills in business intelligence and statistical analysis tools (e.g., Power BI, DAX, Power Query, R, Python), including data modeling, visualization, reporting, and predictive analytics.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools and interest in learning and applying workflow automation and low-code app development platforms (e.g., Power Apps, Power Automate).
- Demonstrated analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in data and automation processes.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex data findings clearly and collaborate with diverse stakeholders to solve problems and advance projects.
- Ability to work independently with self-direction, manage multiple projects simultaneously, complete tasks efficiently, and deliver projects on time.
- Familiarity with data governance principles, data privacy standards, and security best practices relevant to higher education.
- Capacity to document processes, workflows, and reporting standards to support transparency and knowledge sharing.
- Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Educational Research, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Four or more years of experience in data analysis, business intelligence, or process automation.
- Experience working in a higher education institution or system, such as the North Dakota University System.
- Familiarity with student information systems (SIS) and other higher education data platforms.
- Knowledge of institutional accreditation processes and reporting requirements.
- Experience with Microsoft Power Platform tools beyond Power BI, including Power Apps and Power Automate.
- Knowledge of process automation or low-code development platforms used for workflow optimization.
- Familiarity with SQL, Azure data services, or other cloud-based data management tools.
- Experience supporting institutional research, assessment, or strategic planning functions.
