Home Fur Good is a nonprofit no kill animal shelter. We are seeking a Veterinary Technician to join our Animal Care Team. Must be at least 18 years old to apply. Must be able to work with both cats and dogs. Prefer previous shelter experience. CVT a plus but not required. Experience with Pet Point a plus but not required

This position requires attention to detail, good decision making, the ability to work independently and good communication skills with volunteers, the public and co-workers.

This is a part time hours per week) position. We operate a Sunday clinic from 11-3pm and a low cost dental clinic on Wednesdays 7:30 am to 3pm. Cat intakes, spay/neuter surgeries and veterinary care for shelter animals will round out the schedule. Weekly hours will range depending upon number of surgeries/cats coming in/sick or injured cats and dogs at the shelter.

Candidate must be able to provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients using low-stress handling techniques, recognizing aggressive or fearful animal behavior and proficiently restraining animals for various procedures.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Ensure dogs and cats that are on medication are consistently and properly medicated.
  • Act as a conduit between Veterinarian and staff should a medical emergency arise;
  • Work closely with veterinarian staff and with kennel staff to ensure the health and well being of our rescues;
  • Refill prescriptions and reorder special dietary foods;
  • Give vaccines when needed;
  • Perform various technical nursing skills, including but not limited to: venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia induction, monitoring and recovery, fluid administration, diagnostic radiographic patient positioning and imaging, calculation of medical dosages and administering via appropriate routes and dental charting, dental cleaning and polishing.
  • Assist with patient exams, blood draws and handling of sick or injured cats or dogs.
  • Handle all animals humanely; correctly use safety equipment if necessary;
  • Ensure anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, other surgical and clinic equipment are functional and reporting when not.
  • perform clinic medical supply inventory, assisting with ordering, unpacking orders, keeping items stocked.
  • Adhere to all established workflows to ensure the needs of the animals, the department, and the organization are met.
  • Understand and adhere to all set cleaning, chemical, handling and safety procedures.
  • Lift patients up to 45 pounds.

Job Requirement:

  • Must be able to work with both cats and dogs of various sizes and temperments.
  • Must have previously worked as veterinary technician and be comfortable handling sick or injured cats and dogs.
  • Must be able to read and write in English.
  • Ability to adapt to change and accept new duties within a fast-growing organization;
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals within the organization and broader community;
  • Must have reliable transportation.

This is a physically demanding position where employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. There will be animal noises, odors and dander.
