SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in performing a variety of tasks in the general construction, repairs, and maintenance of city water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Candidate's starting salary will be between $20.91/hr. - $27.86/hr.
Salary range for Maintenance Technician I: $ $27.19/hr.
Salary range for Maintenance Technician II: $ $28.84/hr.
Salary range for Maintenance Technician III: $ $31.49/hr.
Examples of DutiesESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs utility maintenance by: Monitoring chlorine residuals. Collecting bacteriological samples. Inspecting manholes and cleanouts. Jetting and cleaning sewer mains. Performing clean up duties following sanitary sewer overflows. Setting up and removing barricades and traffic cones to secure work areas. Marking, digging, cutting, and repairing lines. Operating various equipment under the guidance of the Crew Leader. Operating valves, fire hydrants, and other utility system appurtenances as required. Documenting all work completed.
Identifies and repairs breaks and other damage to City's water distribution systems by: Completing leak surveys of the public water system. Operating motor vehicle, observing City's utility systems. Operating light and heavy equipment under the guidance and supervision of the Crew Leader. Retrieving appropriate equipment and tools from truck. Documenting work completed.
Repairs breaks and other damage to City's wastewater collection systems by: Completing video inspections of the City's wastewater collections system. Completing video inspections of wastewater laterals. Operating motor vehicle, observing City's utility systems. Operating light and heavy equipment under the guidance and supervision of the Crew Leader. Retrieving appropriate equipment and tools from truck. Documenting work completed.
Maintains City's pump stations and lift stations by: Performing grounds maintenance. Inspecting water and wastewater pumps. Inspecting and operating control valves on-site. Repairing leaks. Performing pump maintenance by checking packing, check for vibrations, inspecting check valves, removing debris. Inspecting wet wells. Adjusting floats as necessary. Performing other minor maintenance activities as required. Documenting actions and procedures as required.
Assists other departments as needed by: Providing maintenance support to Parks and Recreation, Drainage and Water and Sewer. Completing irrigation repair as necessary and signs, buttons and markings activities. Working on special projects as assigned, and documenting all work completed. Setting up and removing barricades and traffic cones to secure work areas. Assists other public works divisions with maintenance and repair work as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical QualificationsREQUIRED KNOWNLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions for assigned area. Knowledge of construction and maintenance techniques and methods. Knowledge of traffic control techniques and methods. Knowledge of safe work methods and techniques. Skill in utilizing a variety of tools and equipment for utility, street and park maintenance. Skill in following written and oral instructions. Skill in effective oral and written communication.
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I:
- Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/GED.
- One (1) year general labor experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
- License, Certification or Other Special Requirements:
- Possess a valid State of Texas Driver License at time of hire.
- Employees hired to work in the Public Works Department will be required to obtain a Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B or higher within twelve (12) months of hire in order to continue employment.
- NOTE: All certifications and licenses must be current at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN II:
- Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/GED.
- Two (2) or more years of specialized experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
- License, Certification or Other Special Requirements:
- Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.
- Those assigned to Water Divisions must possess and maintain a Class D Water Operator License or have the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire in order to continue employment.
- NOTE: All certifications and licenses must be current at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN III:
- Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/GED.
- Five (5) or more years of specialized experience
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
- License, Certification or Other Special Requirements:
- Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.
- Those assigned to Water Divisions must possess and maintain two or more of the following License at the time of hire or career progression:
- Class D Water Operator License or higher
- Class I Wastewater Collection License or higher
- Backflow Protection Assembly Tester (BPAT)
- NOTE: All certifications and licenses must be current at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work is performed in an outdoor environment.
- May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling and lifting. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
- May be subject to dangerous machinery, exposure to extreme weather conditions, potential for physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS UTILIZED:
- Equipment utilized includes City vehicle, backhoe, dump trucks, Vac-Con, jet truck, tractors, mowers, shovels, picks, rakes, brooms, hammers, saws, drills, concrete tools and other construction and maintenance related tools and equipment.
