Engineer / Analyst – Renewable Asset Management 

Job Summary 

This position oversees the financial, operational, and strategic performance of renewable energy assets (primarily Solar and Wind) for Southern Power Company. Primary responsibilities include: 

Financial Management

  • Tracking and analyzing revenue, expenses, and overall asset profitability.
  • Maintaining awareness of budgets, forecasts, and financial reports for the assets.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for cost savings or revenue optimization.

Asset Optimization & Lifecycle Management

  • Maximizing the value and efficiency of renewable assets over their lifecycle. 
  • Maintaining awareness of plans for upgrades, repowering, or end-of-life decommissioning.
  • Supporting due diligence of asset acquisitions and new development projects.

Operational Oversight

  • Monitoring the performance of renewable energy assets 
  • Coordinating with O&M teams to ensure high availability and performance

Contract Management & Compliance

  • Supporting O&M contract development of renewable facilities targeted for acquisition or development by SPC
  • Ensuring compliance with O&M Agreements
  • Ensuring that all compliance and regulatory requirements are met
  • Understanding plant operation details and handling communication of updates and resolutions to management, internal and external customers, and peer groups

Performance Analysis & Reporting

  • Collaborating with performance engineering to utilize operational data to identify and pursue efficiency improvements
  • Using data analytics tools to assess key performance indicators (KPIs) such as production variance and availability.
  • Producing regular performance reports for stakeholders.
  • Benchmarking performance against industry standards or contractual expectations.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborating with plant teams, various external and internal stakeholders (e.g., Finance, Partners, Generation Support, Commercial Optimization and Trading, Transmission, Regulatory & Market Compliance, Origination & Acquisitions, Accounting, Project Siting, Development and EPC, Project Analysis and Market Assessment, and Compliance and External Affairs) to ensure optimal asset performance and alignment with organizational goals. 
  • Participating in periodic face-to-face meetings and status calls various teams
  • Developing status reports and presentations for management updates
  • Coordinating site visits to renewable facilities.

Industry Engagement

  • Attending conferences to develop and leverage relationships with industry peers and OEMs to keep a pulse on the market

This position is in Birmingham, AL. 

Overnight travel is required to renewable facilities located in various parts of the United States including, but not limited to, Georgia, West Virginia, Texas, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Maine, Washington, California, New Mexico, and Kansas.

Job Requirements 

Education 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology preferred 

Experience 

Job experience in the following areas is required: 

  • Minimum of 3 years of power plant operations, project engineering, financial modeling, or asset management, preferably in renewables  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Contract management experience
  • Management of multiple medium to large-scale projects, ensuring successful execution from planning through completion

Job experience in the following areas is strongly preferred:

  • Experience managing capital and O&M budgets
  • Ability to interpret operational data – PI or OIS experience a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings (P&ID drawings, single lines, etc.)
  • Ability to develop and communicate Key Performance Indicators to internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience with regulatory filings and compliance in the energy sector

Other relevant experience includes:

  • Power plant design and construction
  • Generation development
  • Utility system planning
