Mainframe Technical Director

About
We're looking for a skilled and forward-thinking Mainframe Technical Director to lead the design, optimization, and modernization of enterprise-grade
IBM z/OS environments.
Ideally, this role blends strategic leadership, client-facing pre-sales support, and consultative technical depth across infrastructure and applications. If you enjoy solving complex challenges, advising clients, and guiding global delivery teams to success, we'd love to hear from you.
What You'll Be Doing
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor systems programmers and developers, fostering technical excellence.
- Work effectively in a remote or hybrid environment, managing distributed teams and stakeholders.
- Contribute to strategic planning and represent mainframe capabilities in executive forums.
Pre-Sales Engagement
- Work closely with the business development team to understand client requirements and design tailored solutions.
- Agree on delivery packages that align with client needs, balancing scope, cost, and timelines.
- Support pre-sales activities by partnering with sales and business development teams.
- Participate in technical presentations and solution design discussions with clients.
Delivery Leadership
- Oversee the delivery of client engagements using a global team of technical experts.
- Ensure delivery is executed to time, budget, and quality standards while maintaining client satisfaction.
- Provide leadership and governance across distributed delivery teams.
z/OS Infrastructure & Optimisation Advisory
- Advise clients on the architecture, performance, and cost optimization of IBM z/OS environments.
- Provide strategic roadmaps for mainframe optimization and performance improvements that deliver measurable cost reduction.
- Design approaches for automation, workload balancing, and high availability to maximize system efficiency and resilience.
- Guide organizations in modernizing their infrastructure in place, enhancing resilience, security, and operability in hybrid environments.
- Lead complex mainframe projects, including subsystem replacements and software migrations.
Application Modernisation & Migration
- Partner with client development teams to improve application performance and integration.
- Provide advisory services on modernisation-in-place strategies to strengthen resilience, security, and hybrid operability.
- Develop strategies for application migration to cloud, including re-platforming and hybrid deployment models.
- Act as a trusted advisor in complex modernization projects, including software replacements and application portfolio transformations.
Security & Compliance Consulting
- Advise clients on aligning mainframe security with internal policies and external regulatory frameworks.
- Provide consulting on identity management frameworks, RACF optimization, and access control models.
- Support clients with security readiness programs, including encryption strategies, audit preparation, and vulnerability management.
- Recommend security architecture improvements that enhance resilience and compliance in hybrid and modernized environments.
What You Bring
- Extensive experience in enterprise-level mainframe environments, with a strong focus on z/OS systems.
- Proven ability to deliver mainframe optimization, performance, and cost reduction initiatives.
- Experience advising on modernization-in-place and migration to cloud (including application migration).
- Hands-on expertise in infrastructure components and development tools listed above.
- Experience leading complex transformation projects, such as systems/software migrations and subsystem replacements.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to design optimization and modernization strategies.
- Experience supporting pre-sales engagements and client-facing technical discussions.
- Comfortable working independently and leading global delivery teams remotely.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills.
