About
Histology Technician
Position Type: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 6:00am-3:00pm (could vary depending on need), plus rotating Saturdays for approximately two hours.
Location: Anatomic Pathology Lab- 2841 Juniper Drive, Lewiston, ID
Primary Function: Under the general direction of department supervisor and pathologists, support the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory by performing functions within the Histology department.
Work Performed:
- Follow and demonstrate PRL's core values, which includes mutual respect and teamwork, a collegial work environment, and commitment to staff and patient safety.
- Understand and adhere to all safety and HIPAA related standards to ensure high quality patient care.
- Follow specific guidelines for specimen acceptance and entry into computer system.
- Labels specimens accurately and according to established procedures.
- Accessioning and grossing of specimens.
- Use microtome and section specimen paraffin blocks.
- Staining of slides, including special stains. Cover slipping of slides.
- Help maintain department records pertaining to specimen cases.
- Help fill client supply orders.
- Assist with preventive maintenance and QC of equipment.
- Participate in continuing education, Quality of Service and Quality Control Indicators.
- Complies with established department policies, procedures, and standards of operation; enforces safety and infection control policies and established.
- Communicate in a professional manner, maintaining patient/client confidentiality.
- Cooperate with department and laboratory staff to maintain harmonious working relationships among employees.
- Help monitor and stock inventory.
- Maintain clean and stocked work areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or pathologist.
Education Background:
- Minimum high School diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, related field, or minimum 24 hours of biology and chemistry preferred.
- Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification preferred, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
Experience Background:
- Typing, data entry, and technical skills preferred.
- Prior laboratory experience preferred.
- High attention to detail and good hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to excel in fast paced team environment.
- Patient care mindset.
