About
Tech Artist or Technical Artist is an emerging profession, a new interface role in the games industry. The Tech Artist acts as a link, a bridge, between the artists and programmers who develop a game.
TasksThe Tech Artist is a “Swiss Army knife” at ease in many fields. They ensure the artistic quality and performance of the video game, while respecting the artistic intentions and technical limits of the interface.
They are expected to find solutions that meet budgets and deadlines, without betraying the artistic vision, while ensuring that the game performs well.
Overall, this video game technician must ensure that the artists have all the software and tools they need to handle the artistic production. They are therefore responsible for designing the video game and setting up and monitoring the artistic processes.
Ultimately, they are responsible for ensuring that all the elements of the game fit together.
For the most part, Tech Artists are passionate about video games, which are part of their private and professional DNA. You don’t do this job by chance.
They often work alongside novice artists to help them develop their skills.
Skills and KnowledgeAs the name suggests, being a Tech Artist means having an artistic bent, which means being creative, intuitive, curious, innovative and resourceful. They also need to be proficient in modelling and texturing techniques, 3D software, and English.
As both a technician and an artist, they need to be team players, working closely with the production teams: artists, game designers, and developers, to develop new creative techniques.
To have the best chance of success in this field, it is advisable to follow a Bac 3 course in art or game design, such as that offered by ETPA in Toulouse, Rennes or Montpellier.
These three renowned schools offer three years’ training in creative skills with a high level of artistic and technical quality, enabling them to become operational immediately after graduation in the captivating and attractive world of video games.
