ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Under the direction of the Assistant Parks Director and Program/Events Specialist, directs assigned part time personnel.
  • This includes participating in interviewing applicants, hiring, making work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction, and making termination recommendations as needed.
  • Assists with scheduling, planning, coordinating, and evaluating recreation programs and events. Duties include assessing citizen needs/interests, evaluation of programs/activities, conducting organizational meetings, and make policy and procedural changes as needed.
  • Assists in scheduling and coordinating use of park facilities. Prepares recreation program budgets as necessary.
  • Promotes recreation programs and events throughout the community by making public speaking presentation, developing brochures/flyers, and writing new media releases as requested.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Composes and prepares correspondence, such as notices of program and events information and responding to inquiries.
  • Performs various bookkeeping duties, including receiving and receipting various fees, calculating and submitting reports of sales, and making deposits.
  • Answers telephone and greets office visitors, including providing customer assistance, answering inquires, and directing to appropriate personnel.
  • Under the Assistant Parks Director and Program/Events Specialist, assists with the creation of department program and events guide.
  • Periodically provides transportation for program participants, including driving passenger van.
  • Must be available to assist in special events and programs throughout the year. This can include, but is not limited to summer concerts, movies, Trunk or Treat, Turkey Day 5K, winter activities, etc.
  • Performs related job duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education – A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent documentation of a GED.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of principles and practices of recreation program and events management.
  • Ability to supervise and direct assigned personnel, including interviewing applicants, hiring, making work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction.
  • Ability to make public speaking presentations, and effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City departments, recreation organizations, program participants, local school corporation, national associations, and the public. Must take into consideration being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to prepare detailed reports and properly operate office equipment.
  • Equipment includes computer, printer, calculator, and telephone.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions while working alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision often under time pressures.
  • Assist Assistant Parks Director and Program/Events Specialist in preparing and administering department budget.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
  • Ability to work extended, evening, and/or weekend hours.

DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

  • Duties include being involved with many variables and considerations.
  • Incumbent performs according to well-defined policies and procedures, exercising independent judgment in identifying community reaction needs, planning and coordinating appropriate program activities, special events, and supervising and directing personnel.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs according to standard practice of the professional field. Incumbent receives general supervision and discusses with Assistant Parks Director and/or Program/Events Specialist unusual/unprecedented situations. Incumbent's work is reviewed primarily for attainment of program objectives and effect on department goals and objectives.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbents maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other City departments, other recreation organizations, program participants, local school corporation, national associations, and the public for purpose of exchanging information, explaining/interpreting policies and procedures, coordinating program activities, and supervising and directing personnel.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment, at a service counter, and outdoors involving sitting and walking at will, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds, close vision, keyboarding, and hearing sounds/communication.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $ $20.00 per hour
