About

Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) utilizes the pro bono model of legal services delivery to provide free civil legal services to low-income individuals who need assistance with a variety of civil legal issues.

HVL seeks a full-time Pro Bono Coordinator to support the recruitment, engagement, and recognition of volunteer attorneys and legal professionals. The Pro Bono Coordinator will play a pivotal role in advancing HVL's mission by managing case placement logistics, fostering relationships with law firms and legal departments, and facilitating communication between HVL staff and pro bono attorneys.

This position also supports outreach efforts aimed at increasing pro bono participation and expanding access to justice across Houston. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, proactive individual with strong communication skills and a deep commitment to public service and volunteerism.

HVL has adopted a hybrid model where staff may work from home part of the week. For this position, the candidate will work Tuesdays and at least one other day of their choosing from HVL's downtown office.

Key Areas of Responsibilities

  • Respond to inquiries from volunteer attorneys and provide support throughout the duration of their pro bono cases.
  • Communicate regularly with volunteer attorneys and law firms to offer updates, assistance, and encouragement.
  • Recruit volunteers for case placement and legal clinics and assist with matching them to appropriate opportunities.
  • Accurately link law firms and volunteers to cases and maintain up-to-date case and volunteer records.
  • Monitor client waitlists and the status of cases referred to volunteers.
  • Manage attorney registrations and troubleshoot access requests for HVL's volunteer portal.
  • Track and report volunteer hours, assisting with data collection and internal reporting needs.
  • Maintain relationships with law firm pro bono coordinators and support their participation in HVL initiatives.
  • Monitor and support participation in HVL's Equal Access to Justice Champions program.
  • Coordinate and assist with pro bono events that advance the goals of HVL's pro bono program.
  • Create sign-up pages for CLEs, trainings, and events.
  • Support the coordination of CLEs, seminars, and other volunteer training opportunities.

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; nonprofit, legal, or volunteer coordination experience preferred.
  • Proficiency across major software platforms, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally with attorneys, staff, and community partners.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Collaborative and flexible team player with a proactive, problem-solving mindset.
  • A commitment to social justice and advocacy for underserved communities.

Annual Salary and Benefits

This position is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience, ranging from $42,000 - $50,000. Benefits include fully paid health, vision and dental insurance; disability and life insurance options; a 401k defined contribution retirement plan with employer match available after one full year of employment, professional development training, monthly parking paid and reimbursed work-related expenses including work-related mileage. HVL currently operates on a hybrid schedule, allowing staff to work remotely for up to 3 days from home with supervisor approval.
