About
L&S Packing Company is looking for a Maintenance Manager to oversee the maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement of all production equipment, utilities, and facility infrastructure within both of our Long Island locations (Farmingdale/Amityville).
This role ensures that equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with food safety standards.
The Maintenance Manager leads the maintenance team, manages preventive and predictive maintenance programs, coordinates capital projects, and works closely with Executive Management, Production, Quality & Safety and HR teams to support uninterrupted operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintenance Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of maintenance technicians, mechanics, and specialists across multiple shifts.
- Plan daily workload, schedule work orders, assign priorities, and ensure proper staffing.
- Conduct performance reviews, training plans, and safety coaching.
- Promote a culture of accountability, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
2. Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
- Develop, implement, and optimize preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) programs for all production and facility equipment.
- Utilize a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to schedule, track, and improve maintenance activity.
- Reduce unplanned downtime through data-driven analysis of breakdowns and recurring issues.
- Establish lubrication schedules, calibration routines, and equipment reliability checks.
3. Equipment Reliability & Troubleshooting
- Oversee diagnosis, repair, and adjustment of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and refrigeration systems.
- Support root-cause analysis (RCA) for complex equipment failures.
- Collaborate with Production to identify process shortcomings and equipment performance gaps.
- Ensure proper spare parts inventory levels to minimize downtime.
4. Compliance, Food Safety & Regulatory Requirements
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with food safety and sanitation standards.
- Maintain documentation related to equipment inspections, calibrations, and repairs for audits.
- Coordinate equipment cleaning, allergen controls, and maintenance-related sanitation procedures.
- Ensure contractors follow facility safety/food safety requirements.
5. Capital Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Manage small- and large-scale engineering and capital improvement projects.
- Assist with equipment installations, upgrades, and commissioning.
- Conduct cost-benefit analyses to improve energy efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance equipment life.
- Drive Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
6. Safety & Environmental Management
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, and electrical safety.
- Investigate safety incidents and near misses, implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate environmental programs related to water, waste, refrigerants and sustainability initiatives.
7. Budgeting & Administrative Duties
- Manage maintenance budgets, labor costs, and capital expenditures.
- Monitor and control spending on parts, contractors, and utilities.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, KPIs, and compliance reports.
- Provide regular updates to plant leadership on equipment performance and improvement plans.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial) preferred, or equivalent technical experience.
- Certifications such as CMRP, PMP, or HACCP are advantageous.
Experience
- 5+ years of maintenance leadership experience in a food manufacturing or similar regulated environment.
- Strong knowledge of automated production equipment, packaging lines, refrigeration systems, boilers, and utilities.
- Experience with CMMS systems and reliability-centered maintenance practices.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in mechanical systems, PLCs, electrical troubleshooting, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
- Understanding of food safety regulations (FDA, USDA, GFSI).
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, TPM, and continuous improvement methodologies.
