The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston is the only institution in the Americas dedicated to the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Our mission is to promote peace, nonviolence, and cultural understanding through exhibits, educational programs, and community events. We are a small, supportive team seeking dedicated individuals to help us create a welcoming and engaging visitor experience.
Position Overview
The Guest Experience Associate is a key member of our team, ensuring every visitor has a welcoming, informative, and meaningful experience. This is a hands-on role that combines guest services, leading tours, exhibit care, retail responsibilities, and event support. As a small team, flexibility, initiative, and collaboration are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Guest Experience & Tours
- Learn museum content and lead tours for families, walk-in visitors, and scheduled school groups.
- Provide warm, attentive customer service and assist guests throughout their visit.
- Operate the admissions and gift shop point-of-sale system.
Museum Operations
- Learn and perform opening and closing procedures.
- Assist with light, directed exhibit cleaning to maintain presentation quality.
Gift Shop Support
- Keep the gift shop organized, visually appealing, and well stocked.
- Research merchandise and suppliers.
- Enter new items into the inventory system.
Events & Community Outreach
- Assist with planning, logistics, and execution of museum events (approximately 12 large events per year and several smaller ones).
- Occasionally assist with off-site outreach, such as school programs or community festivals.
Teamwork & Independence
- Work cooperatively with volunteers and staff across all museum activities.
- Create and follow daily task lists independently once training is complete.
Qualifications
- Friendly and comfortable engaging with visitors of all ages.
- Reliable, adaptable, and energized by working in a small, multi-tasking environment.
- Able to work independently after training and offer thoughtful suggestions for improving efficiency.
- Interest in the museum's mission and willingness to learn about nonviolent conflict resolution.
- Weekend availability required; rare evening events may extend until approximately 10 PM.
- Experience in customer service, hospitality, education, retail, or museums is a plus.
Schedule
- Part-time (15–25 hours/week), 4–5 days per week.
- Typical shifts:
9:30 AM – 2:30 PM
11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
12:30 PM – 5:30 PM
- Schedules are published about 3-6 weeks in advance and based around group visits and events.
Pay: $14-$17/hr DOE
