Job Title: Nuclear Medicine Technologist
Reports To: Nuclear Administrator
General Summary: Completes all functions necessary in performing Nuclear Medicine studies.
This includes instructions, equipment maintenance, performing studies and have studies
interpreted.
Principle duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions):
1. Provides patient with explanation of procedure.
a. Ascertains if appropriate instruction regarding medications and drugs have been
followed.
b. Answers all questions regarding Nuclear Medicine procedures.
c. Provides confirmation of testing date with patient prior to rest date and verifies
all instructions to ensure the use of the isotope.
2. Responsible for preparation of patient charts and necessary forms/filing.
3. Administers all in-office Nuclear Medicine exams.
a. Provides image acquisition, processing and printing.
4. Maintains cleanliness of Nuclear Room.
a. Performs weekly wipe tests.
b. Performs daily area surveys.
c. Responsible for proper waste disposal and storage.
5. Maintains Radiation Safety.
a. Accurate inventory of isotope is maintained.
b. Provides daily quality control of gamma camera, dose calibrator and well
counter.
c. Responsible for ordering of all doses, dose preparation and administration.
d. Responsible for package check-in and return.
6. Maintains consistency of test results, equipment settings and physician involvement.
a. Maintains communication with schedulers and other office staff.
7. Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
a. Participates in staff development and educational activities.
8. Maintains patient confidentiality.
9. Performs related work duties as required.
a. As work schedule permits, assists as staff coverage throughout office. Includes
preparing patient for physician, obtaining vital signs and assisting as requested.
10. Ensures compliance with the radioactive materials licensure requirements.
11. Maintains CE credits as per standard of AART and/or CNMT.
12. Duties assigned per physician, radiation safety officer or nuclear administrator.
13. Participates in the development of nuclear marketing programs and related material for public distribution. Development of educational nuclear presentations to referring office staffs; along with community patient education programs.
14. Responsible for safe transport and set-up of nuclear camera to mobile satellite office locations (if applicable).
15. Oversees development and operations of satellite nuclear testing sites, coordination of schedules, hot lab protocols and procedures along with processing study results and communicating studies to physicians from satellite locations (if applicable).Working Conditions: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to an office/clinic environment.
Skills Required: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients,
manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Involves standing and walking.
Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires normal visual acuity and
hearing. Requires exposure to bodily fluids. Has knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and
physiology to pinpoint areas of imaging necessary. Knowledge of commons safety hazards and
precautions to establish a safe working environment. Skill in operating Nuclear Medicine
equipment. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill
in maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective
working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to react calmly and
effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and
procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.
Education, Experience and Licensure Requirements: Associate Degree (or greater) in
ultrasound/radiologic technology. Completion of Nuclear Medicine certification program.
Certification: RT (N), from AART and/or CNMT, from NMTCB.
