Role Description
The
Controller
is a key financial leader responsible for overseeing all accounting operations for a fast-growing, multi-site animal health organization. This full-time remote role leads the day-to-day financial accounting function, ensures the integrity of financial reporting, and develops scalable systems that support disciplined performance across approximately 50 clinics.
The Controller partners closely with operations, procurement, HR, and senior leadership to maintain strong internal controls, enhance clinic-level financial accuracy, and guide the organization through continued growth. This leader also manages a remote accounting team, drives process optimization, and ensures timely, GAAP-compliant reporting for internal management, audits, and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including variance analysis and supporting schedules.
- Maintain and update accounting policies; ensure full compliance with GAAP.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and lender reporting with external auditors.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Strengthen controls across revenue, payments, payroll, procure-to-pay, inventory, and controlled substances.
- Implement procedures that ensure proper segregation of duties across clinics and central functions.
- Maintain compliance with state and federal requirements, as well as board and lender reporting standards.
Clinic Operations Support
- Partner with Operations, Procurement, and HR to ensure accurate clinic-level accounting practices.
- Monitor financial performance at the clinic level, identifying risks, inefficiencies, and opportunities.
- Ensure timely accruals, expense accuracy, and alignment between financial and operational workflows.
Systems & Process Optimization
- Lead improvements to accounting systems such as NetSuite, Coupa, payroll platforms, and inventory tools.
- Standardize financial workflows across all clinic locations to support scale and consistency.
- Spearhead automation, data integrity, and reporting enhancements to reduce manual work and improve visibility.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop a remote accounting team across AP, AR, and general accounting functions.
- Establish KPIs, set clear expectations, and foster a high-performance, service-oriented culture.
- Recruit and develop talent as the organization continues to grow.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance;
CPA strongly preferred. - 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years overseeing multi-site operations.
- Background in healthcare, veterinary, or consumer services strongly preferred.
- Deep knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and operational accounting best practices.
- Strong systems experience with
NetSuite or a comparable ERP
required. - Exceptional attention to detail, analytical rigor, and accountability.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to partner effectively with operators, clinicians, and senior leaders.
