Description

The Laboratory Supervisor is a leadership position, functioning under the guidance of the Laboratory Director, and is responsible for managing daily operations. Supervisor responsibilities include management of personnel, inventory control, quality assurance, and compliance to safety protocols. The Laboratory Supervisor serves as a crucial link between the technical work of the lab and the administrative goals of the organization, ensuring that the laboratory operates safely, efficiently, and with a high degree of quality and integrity.

Job Duties

  • Supervise daily lab operations and testing of high, moderate, and waived complexity.
  • Provide technical support and problem resolution for testing personnel.
  • Coordinate workflows to ensure accurate results and timely project completion.
  • Manage inventory and recommend alternative supplies as needed.
  • Monitor test performance, review staff work, and ensure corrective actions for quality care.
  • Maintain compliance with accrediting standards and continuous survey readiness.
  • Enforce safety protocols, hazardous waste disposal, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead safety event follow-up and corrective action plans.
  • Collaborate on process improvements, new technologies, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure remedial actions and proper functioning before releasing patient results.
  • Evaluate and document staff competencies; complete annual competency assessments.
  • Communicate regularly with Lab Director and Medical Director on operations.
  • Utilize Laboratory Information System effectively.
  • Assist with scheduling, billing, onboarding, payroll, meetings, and performance reviews.
  • Support department goals, budgeting, and proficiency testing.
  • Represent the lab in committees and meetings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Experience, and other Job Requirements

  • Graduate of a regionally accredited clinical laboratory scientist or medical technology training program.
  • Minimum of 4 years' full time primary experience in specific section(s) responsible for, as a clinical/medical laboratory scientist in a clinical setting.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a supervisory capacity and/or exemplifying leadership skills.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend written materials of a complex level such as contracts, government regulations and other agency requirements written in English.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing including the ability to make effective group presentations in English.
  • Must be able to comprehend and make mathematical computations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and statistical applications.
  • Must be able to learn and use analytical problem-solving techniques.

Licensure or Certification Requirements

  • Certified as an MLS or CLS or MT by ASCP, AMT or an equivalent accredited agency and in compliance with CLIA 88 personnel standards.
  • Must meet competencies within 6 months.
  • BLS certification required (within 3 months of hire).
