About The Company
The Alan Turing Institute, named in honor of the pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing, stands at the forefront of data science and artificial intelligence research. As the UK’s national institute for data science and AI, we are dedicated to solving complex real‑world challenges through innovative research and collaboration. Our mission is to drive technological advancement and societal benefit by harnessing the power of data and AI. We foster a dynamic environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and impactful discoveries. Our work spans multiple sectors including defense, healthcare, finance, and public policy, contributing to a smarter, more connected world. Located in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter at the British Library, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve.
About the Role
The Alan Turing Institute is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Researcher/Data Scientist to join our Defence & National Security (D&NS) programme within the Applied Research Centre (ARC). This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting‑edge AI and Deep Learning projects that address real‑world security challenges. You will collaborate with government partners and cross‑disciplinary teams to translate complex data problems into innovative research solutions. The successful candidate will have a strong background in programming, statistical analysis, and AI methodologies, with a particular focus on Deep Learning frameworks. Your expertise will contribute to the development of reliable, reproducible, and impactful AI solutions that support national security objectives. This position requires a proactive approach, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced research environment.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics. A strong foundation in programming, particularly in Python, is essential. Candidates should have practical experience or a keen interest in Deep Learning and AI, with familiarity in frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Jax. Demonstrated expertise in advanced statistical and numerical methods, alongside best practices in research software engineering—including version control, automated testing, and reproducibility—is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary to effectively articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Eligibility for SC security clearance is mandatory, and a commitment to ethical AI practices and diversity, equity, and inclusion (EDI) principles is essential.
Responsibilities
Understand partner problems and collaborate to shape appropriate research approaches and experimental designs. Apply state‑of‑the‑art Deep Learning and Data Science techniques to address challenges within the Defence & National Security sector. Conduct rigorous investigations, producing deployable proof‑of‑concept code, comprehensive technical reports, and documentation for reuse. Design and execute experiments within small teams, guided by senior staff, ensuring high standards of research quality and reproducibility. Present research findings clearly through technical presentations and written reports to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Utilize standard tooling for testing, version control, and collaboration to maintain technical excellence and project efficiency. Contribute to the development of innovative AI solutions that are reliable, interpretable, and aligned with organizational and ethical standards.
Benefits
The position offers a competitive annual salary ranging from £45,505 to £51,241, complemented by flexible working arrangements and family‑friendly policies. Employees benefit from a comprehensive package including pension schemes, professional development opportunities, and access to cutting‑edge research facilities. The Alan Turing Institute promotes a healthy work‑life balance and encourages continuous learning and innovation. Staff are expected to work at least four days per month from our central London office, with some roles requiring additional days. We support our employees through various initiatives aimed at fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to our mission.
Equal Opportunity
The Alan Turing Institute is committed to creating an inclusive environment where diversity is valued and everyone has equal opportunity to succeed. We actively promote fairness and accessibility throughout our recruitment process and workplace practices. We make reasonable adjustments for candidates with disabilities or long‑term conditions and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds. Our organization adheres to principles of equity and strives to foster a culture of respect, collaboration, and innovation. We believe that diverse teams drive better research and solutions, and we are dedicated to supporting a workforce that reflects the society we serve.
